Welcome to The Sixth Sense - the monthly email newsletter of Brooklyn Community Board 6, serving the neighborhoods of Carroll Gardens/South Brooklyn, Cobble Hill, Columbia Street Waterfront, Gowanus, Park Slope and Red Hook.
We're moving quickly into hibernation cycles where the days get shorter, the temperature gets colder, and we become more reliant on our community to get through the long winter ahead. Have you cleaned out and stocked your caves? Remove the air conditioners and put on the storm windows? Do you have extra food and water on hand? Flashlights and blankets? Snow shovel and deicing agents? It's always a good time to plan before a crisis hits. The New York City Office of Emergency Management has some great tips on how to plan for any disaster.
Of course, when we're not preparing for disasters, November's also a great time to practice your soups and stews. Maybe you got to experience Smith Street's Soup Festival last month? Now it's time to reacquaint yourself with your kitchen. Thinking about that Thanksgiving meal? It'll be here before you know it.
November is also the month dedicated to raising awareness about men's health issues. It's been renamed Movember, a portmanteau of "moustache" and "November." Across the globe men and women are busy raising funds while men let their facial hair grow. So far New Yorkers have raised nearly $145,000 to help.
Some people seemed to get a headstart on Movember this year.

Register for Basic STAR Tax Exemption 
New legislation requires all homeowners receiving a Basic STAR exemption to register with the New York State Tax Department in order to receive the exemption in 2014 and subsequent years.
Homeowners will not have to register in order to receive their 2013 STAR exemptions, nor will they have to re-register every year. Based on the information provided in the registration process, the Tax Department will monitor homeowners' eligibility in future years.
You can register for this exemption online or by calling (518) 457-2036 on weekdays, 8:30am-8:00pm and Saturday, 9:00am-1:00pm.
Senior citizens receiving Enhanced STAR benefits are not affected by the new registration requirement, which applies to Basic STAR benefits only.
Registration will continue through December 31, 2013. |

Things To Do Around the District

Wednesday November 13 & Thursday November 14, 6:30-9:00pm. Environmental Protection Agency Region 2 is hosting information meetings on two consecutive nights in November to speak about the Record Of Decision (ROD) that was signed and became law in late September. The ROD represents the blueprint for the clean-up of the heavily polluted 1.8 mile waterway. According to the agency, "the purpose of the meetings are to discuss the next steps EPA will be taking to address contamination at the Gowanus Canal Superfund site. 11/13 at PS 32, 317 Hoyt Street. 11/14 at South Brooklyn High School, 173 Conover Street.
Gowanus Canal Conservancy Carroll Gardens Street Tree Stewardship. Join us for our last scheduled Clean & Green of 2013! We will weed gardens, mulch, and prune trees in Carroll Gardens Meeting location: Smith St & Carroll St, Brooklyn. Please dress appropriately with closed-toed shoes, work clothes, and sunscreen. These events are open to volunteers of all ages. Those under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. To participate, e-mail: [email protected].
Sunday, November 17, 11am-3pm,The Gowanus Canal Conservancy �Composting Gowanus! November Windrow Build. We will incorporate our monthly 8,000 lbs of food-scraps from GrowNYC into our November compost windrow. Meeting location: Salt Lot, 2 Second Ave, (between 5th St and the Gowanus Canal). Dress appropriately with closed-toed shoes, work clothes, and sunscreen. These events are open to volunteers of all ages. Those under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Tuesday, November 19, 6:30-9pm, Join Neighbors Helping Neighbors (NHN) and Fifth Avenue Committee (FAC) for their Benefit Bash! to support our Homeownership, Foreclosure Prevention, Eviction Prevention, Tenant Organizing and Post-Sandy assistance programs with a festive night of drinks, hors d'oeuvres, light dinner and entertainment at Union Hall in Park Slope! Tickets start at $50.
Saturday, November 23, 8am-4pm Donate-a-Bag at Grand Army Plaza Greenmarkets, City Harvest and Greenmarket will team up for their annual Donate-a-Bag program. As you fill your shopping bags with Thanksgiving market staples like squash, potatoes and carrots, take a moment to Donate-a-Bag for a New Yorker less fortunate.
Thursday, November 28, 9:00 am Prospect Park Track Club's Turkey Trot 5-miler. One of the biggest Brooklyn Running Events of the Year! This 5 Mile Spectacular is the perfect way to kick off your holiday season! 9 AM start time guarantees all will make it in time for turkey. Walkers Welcome. Medals to all registered finishers. Race souvenir guaranteed to first 2500 registered entrants! Due to construction, a slightly modified course has been designed: race starts and finishes near the Oriental Pavilion, off the Park's Lincoln Road entrance. |

Last month we asked you to help us build our library of images so that we're not dependent on clip-art to adorn our publications. We received some great images from shutterbugs around the district. Below are a few gems.
We're continuing to add donated photographs to our collection. Please email your images to [email protected] if you'd like to share. Indicate whether you'd like the photographer to be credited when the image is used. If there are recognizable people in your images, ensure you have their permission for the image to be published.

Every year we host a party to give our volunteer Board Members, Committee Members, family, friends and neighbors a chance to mingle in a place other than a meeting venue.
The party also serves as a fundraiser for Friends of Brooklyn CB6. To that end, we're also soliciting donations for our fiercely competitive raffle.

Friends seeks to provide planning, advocacy, research and administrative resources to supplement the limited capacities and budget of the Community Board, thus enabling it to properly carry out its City Charter mandated tasks of evaluating the needs of the district and advocating on behalf of its communities.

GOOD AND WELFARE
Condolences to the family of retired Congressman Major Owens who passed away on October 21, 2013. Congressman Owens first took office succeeding Shirley Chisholm, and served from 1983-2007. He leaves a long and proud legacy as a progressive voice in politics.
With funding from Borough President Markowitz and Council Member Lander the Parks Department recently broke ground on a much-needed upgrade for Brooklyn's first dog run at the DiMattina Playground in Carroll Gardens. The dog run officially closed for the renovations, expected to take under a year. |
