Holy Eucharist and Imposition of Ashes
Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust ...

We are children of earth, created in the dust, yet filled with the breath of God. On Ash Wednesday we face our mortality and the limits of our earthborn existence. Ashes are smeared on our forehead as we hear the same words spoken first by God to Adam and Eve following their disobedience: You are dust and to dust you shall return. It is hard not to make the connection with the words said at the rite of committal as we bury the dead: Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

The imposition of ashes feels like an imposition, a stark warning that we will not live forever. It is a humbling reminder of our limits and finitude as human beings. But it is also an invitation to embark on a profound spiritual journey that will lead us from death to waters of rebirth and the new life of resurrection. The purpose of Lent is to lead us to the destination of Easter, when we renew our baptismal vows and celebrate the paschal mystery of Jesus' death and resurrection.

Lent is a spring housecleaning of the soul. As we prepare for Easter we are invited to clear the clutter and wash away the grit and grime. The simplicity of the season calls us to focus on things that matter most. I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent (BCP page 265).

Help Support Eagle Scouting
scouting
Hello, my name is Alex Jacobs. I am a life scout in Troop 2. I am working on my Eagle Scout Project to benefit St. Luke's church. My proposal is to create a setting for the steeple cross on the church ground. In order for me to do this I need your help. I have been working with the Vestry,   Father Ken, members of the grounds committee, and other members of the congregation to develop my plan.  Now I am to the point where I can put my plan in action. My hope is to be finished with the placement of the cross by Palm Sunday. In order to make this project a success, I am in need of your help in the form of donations to begin construction of the project. Funds are needed to be purchase supplies, rent equipment, and a marble cutter. I cannot do this without your support. I appreciate your financial and spiritual support. Thank you. Please write your check to St. Luke's Episcopal Church, put Alex Jacobs in the for column. Thank you, in advance, for your support of Alex, Eagle Scouting and the continued beautification of the parish grounds and facilities. Father Ken

Tuesdays In Lent

Pursuing the Dream of Healthy Aging
Tuesdays in Lent beginning February 16
12 Noon (soup and salad provided)

According to the late Oliver Sacks, M.D., "we have come to medicalize aging, frailty, and death, treating them as if they were just one more clinical problem to overcome. However it is not only medicine that is needed in one's declining years but life - a life with meaning, a life as rich and full as possible under the circumstances."
Pursuing the Dream of Healthy Aging is not just about dying and the limits of medicine but about living to the last with autonomy, dignity, and joy!
A few of the topics we will discuss:
The Wisdom of the Aged
Among Doctors, Fierce Reluctance to Let Go
The Unspoken Diagnosis: Old Age
On Dying After Your Time
How Doctors Die: Showing Others the Way
Please feel free to invite a friend or family member. For planning purposes call Wendy at 666-2990 to make a reservation.

The Wisdom of Pre-Planning your Funeral at St. Luke's

When you stop to think about it, we spend a lot of time and energy planning: We plan for retirement. We plan our vacations. We do estate planning. In addition, I have assisted many of you with your funeral plans.

It makes good "faith" sense to plan ahead for funeral arrangements. You are invited to attend a seminar at St. Luke's that is designed to help you with these arrangements.

Some of the topics we will cover are:

  • Things that must be done
  • Decisions
  • Veterans Benefits Information
  • A Will
  • Living Will and Durable Power of Attorney
  • Funeral and Cemetery Instructions

It is my pastoral hope that this seminar will help to eliminate some of the stress and expense that often happens when a death occurs. With proper planning, you can protect those you love and experience peace of mind.

This seminar will be presented on Tuesday, March 15 at 12:00 p.m. A light lunch will be provided. Please make a reservation by simply calling the church office during regular office hours.
