 New Security Procedure for
Religious School

As you may know, the TBC Security Task Force has been working diligently to put new plans and procedures in place to help ensure the ongoing safety of our students and staff.  At this time, I would like to update you on the progress to date. The task force has worked closely with the Education Committee, clergy, faculty and myself to implement some key components of safety while still maintaining an environment that is comfortable and welcoming for our congregants and visitors.

The work has included physical changes to the building, implementation of some new procedures, education for our staff, and communication to our congregants.  These changes and adjustments were made with input from the Anti-Defamation League, neighboring synagogues as well as our local police and fire departments.  While we know these changes may require some small adjustments from our school parents, they will also improve the safety and security of the entire TBC community.

New procedures for the Religious School are as follows:
  • Front Door: The front door to TBC will be locked at all times with the exception of at the very beginning and very end of religious school.  When the doors are unlocked, they are closely monitored by either Kim O'Rielly (TBC Office Manager) or by religious school parents on Sundays. A camera, intercom and buzzer entry system was installed. When the doors are locked, please use the buzzer at the front door, announce yourself, and wait for entry.
  • Religious School Door: During school hours, the door between the new building and the school will be locked. A new locking mechanism has been installed and entry through the Religious School door will require a key fob.  All teachers, clergy and appropriate staff have been issued a key fob for entry.  The door remains unlocked from the inside of the school for easy exit.  This will improve security and fire safety in the school.
  • Early Pick-up:  If you need to pick up your child early, please follow the new procedure below.  We appreciate your understanding and patience as we all get used to these changes.

Early Pick Up Procedure:

If a parent or guardian wishes to take a student out of the building before the designated dismissal time, the parent must contact Jennifer Haynos, the Religious School Director in advance via email or phone at [email protected] or 203-544-8695 x18.   During school hours, contact the office at 203-544-8695

If someone other than the parent or legal guardian will be picking up the student, please provide written permission via an email or hard copy.

Upon arrival, parents will be asked to register in the main office. The student will be escorted to the main office by school staff.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact Jennifer Haynos [email protected] or Ross Tartell at [email protected] .
