A Message from Jessie Fisher, PBN's Executive Director
Dear Friends,

I was asked recently to give a talk regarding the fifth anniversary of the National Trust Conference in Buffalo (stay tuned for information on this talk in October, coming soon).  As I reflected on where we were and how things are different today, I was struck by how, at the time, it seemed as if a whole new day was dawning for preservation efforts in our region.  Substantial national recognition of our many resources combined with changing rhetoric from some of our leadership sectors heralded great hope for a community whose revitalization would be built on an authentic sense of place and would touch all of our varied and unique neighborhoods.  And there has been great progress:  many buildings that were in danger five years ago are now fueling a resurgence in downtown living through conversion into loft apartments and condos; several new historic districts have been put into place, including the creation of the largest National Register Historic District in New York State in the Elmwood Village.

But this is not a time for complacency.  In recent months, we have seen an uptick in demolition proposals, including everything from an occupied apartment building in downtown Buffalo to major character defining commercial mixed-use buildings in our neighborhoods; from old factory buildings instrumental in telling the story of Buffalo to National Register-eligible buildings on our City's waterfront.  PBN will continue to work hard to protect our historic resources.  We will continue to work with developers, municipalities, and community groups to find solutions for difficult preservation issues, and to provide guidance on tackling important policy proposals as we have on the Green Code.  But it is important that your voice be heard as well.   Our newsletter this week highlights different ways to be involved in furthering the preservation movement:  from advocacy actions to caring for your old home to starting a Certified Local Government program in your community.  Whatever avenue you choose, the important thing is that you take action to protect the places you love in this beautiful region we call home.

Looking forward to seeing you out and about this spring!
