Accepting Job Below Skill Level Can Come Back to Haunt Applicant*

According to a study published in the  American Sociological Review , accepting a job below one's skill level can be severely penalizing when applying for future employment. Such action, often taken during times of recession to avoid unemployment, can create the perception that someone who does this is less committed or less competent.

University of Texas at Austin sociologist David Pedular's research found that approximately 5% of men and women working below their skill level received a "callback," or positive employer response when they ventured again into the job search process, a figure that compares with a nearly 50% callback rate for workers in full-time jobs at their skill level. Similarly, less than 5% of men working part time received callbacks. Individuals working part-time, however, show no negative effect for women, and temporary agency employment had little effect for either gender.

NAPS Certification Question ~ Conference Participation and Continuing Education Credit

Question: I participate as often as I can in the annual NAPS Conference and my state association. How do I count continuing education hours at these events toward certification maintenance?

Answer: With both the NAPS and state association conference programs, you should record and count the actual time you were in attendance at keynotes, featured presentations and breakout sessions. Full participation in the annual NAPS Conference will typically generate approximately 12-14 continuing education hours and the typical program at a full-day state association will likely count as 6-7 hours.
