Dave Karl honored with two prestigious awards
|
|
David Karl, the Victor and Peggy Brandstrom Pavel Chair in Oceanography and Director of the Daniel K. Inouye Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education ( C-MORE), has been elected into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the nation's most prestigious honorary societies. Members of the 2015 class include winners of the Nobel Prize and the Pulitzer Prize; MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellowships; and Grammy, Emmy, Oscar and Tony Awards. Read more here.
Karl was also honored with the 2015 DuPont Award in Applied and Environmental Microbiology from the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). With this award, ASM recognizes "outstanding accomplishment" in research and development in environmental microbiology. Read more here.

2015 UH Board of Regents Awards

Julia Hammer, professor of Geology & Geophysics (G&G), is one of the 2015 recipients of the Regents' Medal for Excellence in Teaching. This medal is awarded by the Board of Regents as tribute to faculty members who exhibit an extraordinary level of subject mastery and scholarship, teaching effectiveness and creativity and personal values that benefit students. Congratulations, Julia!

Axel Timmermann, professor of Oceanography and researcher in the International Pacific Research Center (IPRC) is one of the 2015 recipients of
the Regents' Medal for Excellence in Research. This medal is awarded by the Board of Regents in recognition of scholarly contributions that expand the boundaries of knowledge and enrich the lives of students and the community. Congratulations, Axel!

Science Communication Portfolio

Elisha Wood-Charlson, communications project manager for C-MORE, collaborated with the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) to create a Science Communication Portfolio including guidelines, resources and tools to help scientists transform their work into a communications plan that is more accessible for non-scientists. It contains an introductory section on defining communication goals and understanding the audience; and presents several modules on practical topics such as how to create talking points for a media interview and how to craft a post for social media.
Phil Thompson, associate director at the University of Hawai?i Sea Level Center shares his knowledge about Pacific sea level change in an example portfolio, which includes a three-minute video.

Expanding Your Horizons workshop: Success!
|
|
Last month, 145 girls in grades 6 - 8 attended the 2nd annual Expanding Your Horizons - Hawai'i workshop, part of a nationwide outreach program designed to foster young girls' enthusiasm for STEM careers, inform them of professions and opportunities, and encourage them to continue their studies in science and math to reach their goals and objectives. This is a unique opportunity for girls to engage in hands-on workshops in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) led by some of Hawai'i's top scientists, engineers, and specialists. Organizer and Atmospheric Sciences professor, Jennifer Griswold has received wonderful emails from parents expressing their gratitude for such a fun and inspiring experience -- many emails ending with, "When will next year's workshop be?"

Five Marine Biology Graduate Students Awarded NSF Fellowships

Yvonne Barkley, Mackenzie Gerringer, Erika Johnston, Kanoe Morishige, and Eileen Nalley from the UHM
Marine Biology Graduate Program have received National Science Foundation (NSF)
Graduate Research Fellowships for 2015. The GRFP fellowships provides three-years of support to doctoral or masters students in the form of an annual stipend and education allowance. The Marine Biology Graduate Program is an interdisciplinary program housed within both the College of Natural Sciences and SOEST and is currently led by Dr. Timothy Tricas, Professor of Biology and Dr. Megan Donahue, Associate Researcher at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB).

winning entry about how a smelly lake in her hometown in New Zealand inspired her to become an aquatic ecologist.

Friday, October 23 (8:30 am - 2 pm) and Saturday, October 24, (10 am - 2 pm)
