National Poetry Month
April is National Poetry Month, as declared by the American Academy of Poets and by Congress. We can celebrate that here at MidWeek by publishing a poem each week in April.
If you have a favorite poem, perhaps one of your own writing or just one that especially pleases you, send it to Midweek at [email protected], and we'll get it in. There can certainly be more than one per week
We'll start today with a celebration of our own Maria Jennings, joyous at all times, but especially when she acolytes.

Maria
She waits, this young girl, as her mother takes the huge book from its stand on the altar,
Then hands it to Maria.
She takes it, walks slowly, carefully, stepping down twice, and takes her place in the aisle
Among the people.
The gospel always happens among the people, and she, Maria, brings it to them.
Now her mother, a priest, reads it aloud. The poor widow with her two coins.
The book is as heavy as the reading itself, but Maria can hold it. She is a strong girl.
Soon her mother finishes reading, and the book is closed.
Maria carries it back up the aisle, up the two
Little steps and toward the altar. Her mother replaces the book on its stand. They bow, and
Maria Triumphant, takes her seat.

How To Speak Episcopalian
The Good Word this week is
The Peace
We pass the Peace at the end of the Liturgy of the Word. When Fr. Billy says, "The Peace of the Lord, always be with you," and we respond, "And also with you." (Even in the Diocese of West Texas, we never said, "Peace Y'all, I promise.)
Passing the Peace is a liturgical form of greeting that dates back to Romans 16:16, "Greet one another with a holy kiss." -- though we generally settle for a handshake or perhaps an occasional hug. In the early church, refusing to take part in the Peace was grounds for witholding Communion. It represents Christian love, reconciliation and renewed relationships. It can be chanted, and there are settings for it in The Hymnal 1982.
Two forms are found in the Book of Common Prayer on pages 332 and 360. This is another ancient Christian practice that exemplifies the love of God that makes us one.

We need to give the Easter lillies a home. So take one or more home with you, They add so much to the altar at Eastertide.

Labels for Down Home Ranch

Labels for Education has announced that due to a decline in the activity of the program they are bringing the program to a close. We have until the end of August to collect as many "Labels" as we can for Down Home Ranch. The Collection Box will be placed in the Narthex by the bulletin board for your convenience in placing the Labels in it. We will be able to get a VISA CARD for the Ranch so they can use it to purchase items for their new conference center. The Daughters of The King, in our Providence VII, are also helping to collect these Labels.
Please help us to gather as many Labels as we can.

Our supply of gift cards is beginning to run a bit thin. So if you can spare an extra $10.00 when you are shopping in HEB or in Walmart, for a card for the needy, it would be greatly appreciated. We have been able to help a fair number of grateful people because of your generosity already.

Dudley Baker Announces Post-Easter Blood Drive
This Saturday, April 9th, we are having our first 2016 blood drive. What better time to offer the gift that can save a life than in Easter, the season of new life -- Resurrection Life. That is what we celebrate every day around here. May we work hard this year to transform the words Resurrection Life to Resurrection Blood!
We need the help of every one of you, who gives regularly. Help us publicize this ministry. Tell another member how fulfilling it is to help an unknown person in need -- perhaps to save a life! Tell them how quick and easy it is. Remind them that blood is a precious substance, that comes only from one source -- the arm of a healthy, grateful servant with 40 minutes to spare. You can even tell them how good the cookies are!

Wednesday Bible Study Continues
Wednesday morning Bible Study continues from 8:30 am to 9:30 am at Genuine Joe's Coffee House at 2001 W. Anderson Lane. The Bible students have studied a lot of the scripture so far, and will continue on. They have finished their study of the Gospel According to John and have begun the study of the Acts of the Apostles.
