newsDNP Program Ranked No. 5 in U.S. News & World Report's First-Ever DNP Rankings
UMSON's Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program is ranked No. 5 in the  U.S. News & World Report's inaugural DNP rankings. Additionally, UMSON is ranked No. 8 among all accredited graduate nursing programs. Three UMSON master's specialties/options are ranked in the top five in the 2017 edition of "America's Best Graduate Schools." The Clinical Nurse Leader option and Nursing Informatics specialty remain at No. 1 and the Administration specialty remains at No. 5. Other UMSON specialties ranked in the top 10 include the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner/Clinical Nurse Specialist, Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, and Family Nurse Practitioner specialties, which are each ranked at No. 8; the Nurse Anesthesia specialty is No. 10. 10th Anniversary Celebration of Jonas Center for Nursing and Veterans Healthcare
On Friday, March 18, Dean Jane M. Kirschling, PhD, RN, FAAN; Meg Johantgen, PhD, RN, associate professor and associate dean for the PhD Program; Shannon Idzik, DNP '10, CRNP, FAANP, associate professor and associate dean for the DNP Program; and  Irene Akande, DNP student and Jonas Nurse Leader Scholar, traveled to New York City to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Jonas Center for Nursing and Veterans Healthcare. During the event, Barbara and Donald Jonas, who raised more than $600,000 in support of 60 Jonas Nurse Leader Scholars, were recognized for their monumental contributions to the field of nursing and for their pledge to fund nursing education through 2028.

UMSON Receives $750,000 Gift from Alumna Mary Catherine Bunting
Baltimore benefactor Mary Catherine Bunting, MS '72, CRNP, RN, has gifted UMSON $750,000 to support the development and implementation of a new, three-year community public health initiative in collaboration with the Maryland Family Network. This partnership will focus on improving overall health and environmental health within Early Head Start and Head Start Centers in Baltimore City.  Read more.
USG Receives Equipment and Materials Award
The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) has received a $108,436.42 Maryland Clinical Simulation Resource Consortium Equipment and Materials Award.  Through the award, USG will receive a new model birthing bed, wound care models, portable two-way mirror panels, a mobile medication station, programmable thermometers, and programmable stethoscopes and auscultation trainers to assess heart, lung, and bowel sounds. These items will be used to enhance learning through simulated technology at the USG location. Read more.
Neonatal Nurse Education in Liberia
Office of Global Health Director Yolanda Ogbolu, PhD '11, MS '05, BSN '04, CRNP-Neonatal, assistant professor, and Beth Barrows, MS '13, BSN '05, RN, clinical instructor, traveled to Monrovia, Liberia, in late February to conduct neonatal nurse education at St. Joseph's Catholic Hospital. The program was designed and conducted in collaboration with UMSON partner nursing school Mother Patern College of Health Sciences of Monrovia. The program was funded by Catholic Relief Services. St. Joseph's Catholic Hospital lost nine staff members to Ebola during the 2014-2015 outbreak.
Welcome New Staff
Ginger Pritchett, AA, has joined the Office of Student and Academic Affairs as an academic program specialist. Prior to joining UMSON, Ginger served as a communications operator at Saint Agnes Hospital in Baltimore and as an administrative assistant with Swift Staffing. Ginger holds an Associate of Arts degree from the University of Phoenix and is working toward her bachelor's degree in social science at the University of Maryland University College. 

Jean (Jill) Sullivan, MA, has joined the Department of Partnerships, Professional Education, and Practice as an academic program specialist. Prior to joining UMSON, Jill served as a foreign language teacher with Baltimore County Public Schools and as a program assistant at Loyola University in Baltimore. Jill holds master's degree in education from the Notre Dame of Maryland University and a bachelor's degree in art history from Wheaton College.

Lisa Rowen, DNSc, MS '86, RN, CENP, FAAN, has been named system chief nurse executive for the University of Maryland Medical System. She has served as senior vice president for patient care services and chief nursing officer (CNO) at the University of Maryland Medical Center since 2007, and in 2015, she was also appointed as CNO for the University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus.  Click here to read more.

The UMSON Living History Museum is seeking alumni volunteers to serve as docents. The museum is open from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday during the academic semesters. Docents are also needed for occasional special events, such school tours and open houses for new and prospective students. Scheduling is flexible. Grant also participated in a Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute stakeholder workshop in Crystal City, Va., where she was chair of the Models of Care Delivery breakout session, " Prioritizing Comparative Effectiveness Research Questions for Patient-Centered Palliative Care Delivery for Adult Patients with Advanced Illnesses and Their Caregivers." 

Veronica Gutchell,  DNP '13, RN, CNS, CRNP, assistant professor, participated in the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education's (CCNE) spring 2016 evaluator training. After training, evaluators serve on CCNE accreditation review teams.

Barbara Resnick, PhD '96, RN, CRNP, FAAN, FAANP, professor, has been awarded a five-year, $1,602,489 R01 grant from the National Institute on Aging for her project, "Dissemination and Implementation of Function Focused Care for Assisted Living." The study will test the dissemination and implementation of a theory-based care management approach across 96 assisted living settings in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts.

The award will be used to support her dissertation research, titled, "Impact of Nurse Practitioner Independent Prescriptive Authority on Psychotropic Medication Use in Medicaid-Insured Youth.
