Residents Advocate for Affordable Assisted Living
Residents and staff members, of affordable assisted living communities managed by Gardant, helped advocate for the Illinois Supportive Living Program. They attended the 2016 Day at the Capitol and Visit with the Governor sponsored by the Affordable Assisted Living Coalition. The program especially benefits low-income older adults and individuals with physical disabilities who need some help to maintain their independence. It helps them avoid premature institutionalization in a nursing home. Last year, the program was estimated to have saved the State of Illinois more than $150 million.
 
Research Discovery and Anti-Aging Drugs

Researchers have found that Lithium, a drug used to treat patients with bi-polar disorders, increased the lifespan of fruit flies. This discovery might mean that anti-aging drugs are a step closer to reality, says a report posted April 10 on the Medical News Today website.

Rosacea and Parkinson's

A report posted on the Medical News Today website indicates that new research published by JAMA Neurology suggests that there is a link between rosacea and Parkinson's disease. Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition.
 
Ground Broken for Assisted Living in Minooka, Illinois
Ground was broken in March to mark the start of construction on Heritage Woods of Minooka, an affordable assisted living community that will house 101 studio and one-bedroom apartments. Gardant is proud to have been selected as the management company for the nearly $18 million development, which will serve adults 65 years of age and older. The community will operate through the Illinois Supportive Living Program. Opening is scheduled for the Spring of 2017. Call 877-882-1495 for more information.
  
Feeling Down? Get Up!

The National Institute on Aging says that the next time you are feeling down, anxious or stressed, you should try getting up and start moving. Research has shown that exercise helps support emotional and mental health in addition to physical well-being.

Leadership Team Promotions
Gardant Management Solutions is pleased to announce several key leadership team promotions. They include Jo Ellen Bleavins being promoted from Chief Operating Officer to the position of President of the company and Julie Simpkins being promoted from Senior Vice President of Strategy and Business Development to Chief Operating Officer. Rod Burkett, who was serving as President and Chief Executive Officer, continues to serve as CEO.

Predicting Longevity
A combination of age and the ability to climb stairs or walk short distances may provide a simple way to predict longevity, says a HealthDay report that was posted April 7 on the U.S. News and World Report HEALTH website.
