Message from the President

On March 17th, the North Central Conference on Summer Sessions (NCCSS) unanimously voted to dissolve and fully align its membership with NAASS. Since NCCSS had been serving as the northcentral region for NAASS, this consolidation of organizational structures eliminates duplication, focuses the use of talent and resources, and brings more clarity to the message of advocating on behalf of summer programs and the students we serve. Both the leadership of NCCSS and NAASS worked on this for several years to make sure the transition will be smooth and the long-term impact positive for all involved. As a part of this ongoing process, NAASS made several changes over the last couple years to strengthen its regional organizational structure.

NAASS regions consist of at least an elected vice president and two assistant vice presidents appointed by the regional vice president. The northcentral region, with this consolidation, smartly expanded its regional leadership positions, beyond those required by NAASS, and it will certainly serve as a role model for the other regions of NAASS. I thank all those dedicated summer programs administrators in both organizations who worked so hard for so long on this project. It was a courageous, forward-thinking group of leaders in the northcentral states who voted unanimously to make this change for stronger summer programs in the future.

Advocating on Behalf of Summer

A new advocacy committee was recently formed by NAASS President Gary Simon to help provide more information and/or sources of information to the NAASS membership that is important to summer session administrators. The topics will not be limited and will hopefully cover a wide array of issues related to the responsibilities of NAASS members.  Each topic will have an executive summary of the information and a url for more detailed information.  The name of the committee member who contributed the information will be noted. If you would like to contribute an abstract or have an idea for the committee to research, please email Bill McClure, billmcclure07@gmail.com, or Allyson Morris, amorris@scu.edu, Advocacy Committee Co-chairs. Here are three abstracts.

Climb, Navigating the Business of Higher Education is a collection of ideas, quotes, and articles from deans, directors, and other higher education leaders on the transformative power of non-traditional higher education.  Just recently published and distributed by Destiny solutions and The EvoLLLution, this book is about "fostering world-class customer engagement with learners to launch new programs, grow enrollments, and keep operations running smoothly". Sounds like the work of Summer Session administrators!  Asserting that "the higher education map has been redrawn", Climb showcases some of the brightest and innovative minds on how to navigate through this new and rapidly-changing terrain. The roadmap to success requires "an entrepreneurial attitude, an agile infrastructure, and a customer-centric ethos". The insights and writings in this easy-read anthology are thought provoking and challenging.

Students favor summer online courses for convenience
(Bailey Wright, UConn Daily) Keeping up with increasingly digital times, colleges across the country have begun to offer more online courses to students in order to provide a more convenient and interactive learning experience. UConn is no different. Every year, the university offers 35 to 40 new online courses for its shortened summer session, a popular time for students to earn credits away from campus, Associate Director of UConn eCampus Desmond McCaffrey said. The Uconn eCampus provides a resource for students and faculty to interact regularly in a variety of ways. One of their programs helps faculty design online courses. "One of the things I'm happy to see is the breath of opportunity," McCaffrey said about the new courses being offered in the summer, particularly those online.

Marketing Online Education Today: A Look At Strategy (Mike King, Evolllution)
Marketing in higher education today means a lot more than designing a strong pamphlet or starting a Twitter account. Students today are savvy consumers with immensely high and very specific expectations of their colleges and universities. Institutions need to work hard to ensure they get in front of prospective students and work even harder to retain them if they choose to enroll. In this interview series, Mike King and Emily McInerney reflect on the strategy that underlies their marketing efforts and discuss some of the tactics they put into place to strengthen the bonds they form with students.

2015 Joint Statistical Report - Findings Now Available!

Hot off the press! Findings from the 2015 Joint Statistical Report survey are now available. Produced by the NAASS Quality and Research Committee, the Joint Statistical Report (JSR) provides comparative information on college and university summer sessions. This information is useful to members of the association for benchmarking, evaluating, and improving summer session programming. The JSR provides usable data for the overall advancement of summer session and its importance to the instruction of students and successful operation of higher education enterprises. Key areas of the survey focus on summer session administrative structures, finances, marketing, and enrollment.

The JSR is sponsored by the research committees of the following summer session associations and based upon a survey of their institutional members: Association of University Summer Sessions (AUSS), North American Association of Summer Sessions (NAASS), North Central Conference on Summer Sessions (NCCSS), and Western Association of Summer Session Administrators (WASSA).

For an overview of the 2015 survey findings, click here to download. The Quality and Research Committee is busy working on the full report, which is forthcoming in late spring 2016. Thanks to all those who took the time to complete the JSR survey in the fall! Your responses are included in this year's findings.
