Assistant Chief Terence Monahan, Chief of Department, addressing the community
Members of Community Board 7 were on hand earlier this month to learn about the new Neighborhood Community Officer pilot program which has started in the
72nd Precinct, one of thirteen precincts city-wide to join the program. The program brings back the concept of beat cops, who will patrol the same area every day and build relationships with the local community.
New precinct commander Emmanuel Gonzalez explained, "We have divided the precinct into four sectors, there used to be eight, and each sector has two coordinators. These managers do anything and everything in their power to conduct and investigation and detective work. They identify conditions in their respective sector and have sector cars and response autos [to assist with their work."
The pilot program has already brought and influx of new officers and resources to the precinct. Thirty-five new officers have been assigned to the precinct with another eighteen expected. New vehicles have also been deployed.

Community Board 7 Chairman Daniel Murphy welcomed the Innovation Lab as a vehicle for continued economic development and job creation along the waterfront. "For over a century, the Sunset Park waterfront has been a place where commerce and industry meets innovation. It's the place where people have found work to improve their livelihood and where products can be made to improve the world. Brooklyn Community Board 7 congratulates Industry City on the creation of The Innovation Lab and looks forward to the next century of innovation and shared opportunity for our community," he remarked.

CB 7 voted to approve a list of sites for the Department of Education to examine for potential new schools in the district at the March meeting. The sites of the four schools recently built in the community and the one on the way have been found by the Board's Site Selection Committee.
The Board voted in March to support the next project for the continued improvement of Sunset Park, replacing the chain link fence with steel fences, new benches and central (6th Avenue) pathway.
CB 7's Transportation Committee held a meeting earlier in the month concerning speed hump requests for 44th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues and for East 4th Street between Greenwood Avenue and Ft. Hamilton Parkway. It is expected these locations will be presented to the full Board tonight.
