April Business of the Month ~ Reed's Do It Best
2nd Generation of Recognition
On Thursday, April 14ththe Wells County Chamber of Commerce staff and Ambassadors recognized Reed's Do It Best as the April Business of the Month. Reed's Do It Best has been in the community for the past 40 years when Richard and Beverly Reed started the business in 1976. Son, Greg Reed was just 10 years old when his father opened the hardware store. Today, Greg and his wife, Cynthia, own and operate the business to carry on the tradition of setting themselves apart because "people matter and our customers matter."

"I am so thankful for my parents and I am proud to be a second generation owning and operating this business," says (Greg) Reed. "We were born and raised here and this is home to us. To anywhere else, would not be considered home."

Reed's Do It Best stresses the importance of relationships with customers and offering advice, care, and support with whatever project needs accomplished. "Our goal is to empower our customers with the right resources they need for their home projects," Cynthia explains.

"We try very hard to diversify what we offer. The store now carries the largest nuts and bolts department in the area. We are huge in bulk bolts. My new niche is selling and installing pools this year," says Greg. Customers can find paint options, rental of power tools and equipment, a huge lawn and garden center, farm and feed supplies, Webber Gas Grills, charcoal grills, small engine repairs, a gift shop and much more. Greg also said, "Many people are not aware that our gift shop carries Melissa and Doug Toys, bereavement gifts, and so many other nice items."

A unique aspect of the business is the garden center, which contains three grower houses and one vegetable house. "We grow 95% of what we sell from scratch. Plants, trees, and flowers are given the upmost TLC from our staff. Even if we don't have something a customer wants, I am sure I can get it!" says Cynthia. "Customers can pre-order and bring in their containers in the fall and we can have them potted in the spring with plants and flowers."

Leadership Academy Applications Being Accepted!
About the Program...
This unique leadership academy for Wells County, started in 2008, was a collaboration with Huntington University Foundation's Center for Leadership Studies. Classes are based on materials developed for community leadership programs, written by Dr. Tim Elmore who is the Founder and President of Growing Leaders. He has taught leadership through the power of images and stories that enable people to influence others in a positive way. Over 25 facilitators from Wells County have been trained by Dr. Elmore to lead participants through a series of discussions and leadership topics.

Who Should Participate?
Anyone who wants to improve their leadership skills, develop stronger communication skills, and focus on creating a network of peer-mentor-business relationships. Our desire is that these individuals would then make a life-long commitment to community service and help mentor new leaders.

"Wells County Leadership Academy has allowed me to become more focused on setting goals for myself in my work environment and in my personal life.  The academy has given me the opportunity to listen to respected individuals in our community and learn from their past success and past failures.  I have been motivated to work harder and get better each day as a result of the experience with Leadership Academy.

Each month, I look forward to meeting with our group because I feel we are able to learn from each other, grow as individuals, and grow as future leaders.  This has been a blessing and a great opportunity; I would recommend the academy to any person who would like to learn more about themselves as a leader and the community."
