Are You Asking the #1 Best Interview Question?

Smart people don't have all the answers to every problem. They just know how to find the answers. So, it is not "what" people know that makes them successful. It is "how" they go about solving problems, accomplishing tasks, or dealing with unexpected situations that makes the difference.

During an interview, how do you discover a person's capacity for success? It all boils down to asking one key question, according Lou Adler, thought leader and author of Performance-based Hiring.

Answer to Today's Dos & Don'ts

Should you ask this standard interview question, "What is your biggest weakness?"

Answer
This "weakness" question has fallen into the trap of expected and boring. Candidates are prepared to tell you a canned answer such as, "I'm a perfectionist" or "I don't enjoy paperwork."  It not the question that is bad, but the way it is asked. Try this instead, "Tell me what you believe your last boss would say is your biggest weakness. How did it affect your daily work? And what did you do to minimize its effects?"
