Grey Box - Native plant sale

Put a piece of natural heritage in your backyard by ordering your plants today and collecting them on 1 May!

FREE entry to Belair National Park to collect your Grey Box Day seedlings.

Grey Box Day aims to increase the extent of the nationally-endangered Grey Box Grassy Woodlands by putting local native plants back into home gardens.

Traditionally, in South Australia, these woodlands extended from Sellicks Hill to Burnside, mainly along the Hills Face and Adelaide Plains. However since settlement its distribution has been reduced from approximately 20,000 hectares to less than 2,000 hectares with most of the remaining woodland threatened by weeds, introduced animals and development.

When: Sunday 1 May - 10am - 4pm
Where: Belair National Park, State Flora
Cost: $10 for a 6 pack or $30 for 20 native plants

Recycling tip - Steel lids and bottle tops

Steel lids and bottle tops are too small to go straight into the recycling bin; they will fall through the sorting machines or get caught up in the paper which causes contamination of the paper bales.

The best way to recycle them is to collect them in an empty steel can and squeeze the top closed when it's about half full so the lids don't fall out.

The cans and tops can go in the recycling bin and at the recycling station, magnets will pick up the steel cans with the tops inside.

The easiest way to work out if a top is made of steel is to try to pick it up with a magnet. If it sticks, it's steel.

Visit the  City of Marion website for more information about recycling and waste management.

Mosquitos numbers at all time low

Last year, mosquito numbers at Warriparinga Wetlands and Oaklands Wetland were at an all time low.

Most wetlands of a semi-permanent nature will have a natural mosquito presence.

Monitoring has been taking place at wetlands across Adelaide to find out if creating wetlands in urban areas, increases the presence of mosquitos.

Results from nine years of research suggests that healthy, well designed and monitored wetlands do not experience a rise in mosquito numbers.

City of Marion is a partner in the Mosquito Monitoring Program run through the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges NRM Board.
