"Money cannot buy health, but I'd settle for a diamond-studded wheelchair."
(Dorothy Parker)

Personally, after the month I've had, I'd take the health; but for one-liners, there's no one like Dorothy Parker.  This month, the featured topic is Satire and Humor... a loaded topic if there ever was one.   I was planning on linking to the Who's on First video on YouTube since Major League Baseball had it's opening this week .... what the heck, here it is....and this skit is one of the all time greats that features  the wonderful word play of Abbott & Costello.  See, that's the thing with Humor & Satire - there's so much good stuff out there!

Since there is so much good stuff, let's get right to it.

Enjoy!

Count Palmiro VIcarion's Book of Bawdy Ballads

Paris: Olympia Press, 1961. 4th Edition. Softcover w/French folds. Very good. 126p. Cover edges scraped. (8-1/8"x5-1/4")
Humours of History

London: The Morning Ledger Book. Illus. by Arthur Moreland. Very Good. Hardcover. Reproduced from originals from The Morning Ledger. Complete Edition. [No date: circa1910]. Oblong, 7.5 inches tall by 10 inches long, cloth spine with titles to stiff decorative paper covered boards. Shelf wear to corners. Bindings firm and square. Text clean with previous owner's name inside front has toning with occasional spotting.----Arthur Moreland was an English artist noted as an illustrator of caricatures and humorous drawings.----His cartoons were noted for their pungent wit and it is said that they contributed to the Tory landslide of 1906 and the revival of Liberalism. He retired from drawing political cartoons during the Great War and instead worked freelance for many papers. His work was exhibited at the Coronation Exhibition in 1911.

The Fambly Album

New York: The Reilly & Britton Company. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1917. Hardcover. Text is clean. Decorated cover with applique illustration. Base of spine bumped/rubbed. ; With every page, Rebecca tells family stories of each member of the extended family to the new preacher in town, who came by to introduce himself to the townsfolk. Mom wasn't home, but Rebecca is happy to be hospitiable and introduce the family - with details they may not want a preacher to know. Nice turn of last century humor piece.

The Government Inspector

[U.S.] (27 cm, 10.65"). 24 col. illus.. ca. 1971 A remarkable album: 24 panels of hand-inked and painted costume designs for a production of Gogol's Government Inspector (a.k.a. The Inspector General, originally Revizor). These delightful designs, slightly reminiscent in style of Jean de Brunhoff's illustrations, convey a great deal of personality; each panel's character is shown in a different pose - including those characters given more than one costume - with a range of expressions portrayed throughout. The images were painted on heavy panels bound together with cloth tape => leporello- or accordion-style, with the entire sequence unfolding as one very long, very impressive strip ABOUT 20 FEET LONG. Following Anne Gregory's name on the cover here is the designation, "'71," but its significance has not been established. There was a premiere of Zador's revised operatic version of The Government Inspector at El Camino College in that year, and these do look like they could be operatic costumes; so perhaps the date refers to that production - or, perhaps "Anne Gregory" was to graduate from that institution or another, that year.

For Partly Proud Parents

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1950. First Edition, Stated. Pictorial Hardcover. Very Good/good +. Hershfield, Leo. x, [53p.] Signed by author on front endpaper. Endpapers brown at hinges, cover edges sunned and dented, jacket has small chips and tears to edges and a moisture stain at top front. B&w illustrations.

                  Don Quixote
London: Blackie & Son, 1900. First edition.. Hardcover. Near fine. 4to. xii, 245, (3)pp, including a 2 page publisher's catalogue. 11 full page color plates, illustrated title page, 19 half page illustrations by Walter Crane. Publisher's dull red cloth blocked on the spine in black and tan, and on both boards in black, tan, blue and white in designs bythe illustrator. The frontispiece and the title page depict Don Quixote and a copy of the Spanish romance by Amadis de Gaul. Judge Parry's retelling of Cervantes is based on the Thomas Shelton translation. Traces of wear to the edges of the cloth, upper inner hinge neatly repaired, else this is a very good to near fine copy.

The Hunting of the Snark

New York: James R. Osgood, 1877. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. First American edition, first printing. In Very Good condition. Several pages show very tiny tears to edges. Light offsetting to end papers. Rear hinge exposed. Chipping to spine ends and corners. Slight lean to spine. A beautiful little book, with 9 illustrations and the blank "Ocean Chart" present.

Satyricon
Amstelaedami: Jansonio-Waesbergios 4to (26.3 cm, 10.4"). 2 vols. I: Frontis., [37] ff., 886, [2] pp.; illus. II: [4] ff., 408 pp., [66 (index)] ff.. 1743 One of the most famous satires of all time, here in the expanded revision of Pieter Burmann's edition, with the much-debated corrections by Johann Jacob Reiske - with which the editor's son, Caspar Burman, was most displeased. Brunet calls the 1743 edition "beaucoup plus complète que la précédente [of 1709], et celle qu'on recherche le plus;" Dibdin confirms that this second edition is preferred by collectors and "the curious" over the first. The neoclassical frontispiece was engraved by J.C. Philips.

19th-century quarter sheep in imitation of morocco, with marbled paper-covered sides, spines with gilt-stamped titles; spines, edges, and extremities rubbed, vol. I with spot of discoloration to spine. Main title-page with shadows of pencilled numerals. Pages clean.

Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme

Paris, 1688. Early Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 12mo. (3 x 5'). Sixth printing of this classic. (iv), 3-108pp. Later binding of stiff boards covered in marbled paper. Full page engraved frontispiece followed by the title, list of actors and the text. A reimpression of the Elzevir first edition of 1671. A very good copy. Rare in any 17th century edition. Guibert, Bibliographie des OEuvres de Moliere, p. 315.

Sunday's Fun Day, Charlie Brown

New York: Holt, Rinehart, and Winston. (1965). First. First edition. Pictorial wrappers. Pages age-toned, else near fine.

An Ideal Husband

London: Methuen & Co. G + : in good (plus) condition without dust jacket. Spine darkened. Heraldic bookplate to front paste. Light foxing to endpapers. Teg - remaining edges uncut. 1908. Limited Edition [of 1000 copies]. Cream gilt-decorated hardback cloth cover. 220mm x 160mm

Mr. & Mistress
Knight Publishers, New York, 1938. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. Steinberg, Saul. Debossed mark on corner of front board possibly indicates book club edition, though this is an unusual signifier. Boards faintly soiled. 1938 Hard Cover. xiv, 121 pp. 8vo. A tongue in cheek guide for those engaging in extramarital affairs. From the preface: 'We have no intention of presenting our qualifications for the authorship of this book. To do so would violate its first rule - discretion. We have outlined numerous situations, in any one of which you may find yourself sooner or later. We think you will agree that our rules for handling these situations are based on sound sense and good taste. But if you do not agree, you have only to follow the opposite course. And see where that lands you.' Illustrations by Saul Steinberg, a regular contributor to The New Yorker. Somewhat scarce - 11 copies in OCLC, no auction records, none in trade.

Until Next Month...

"Wit and humor do not reside in slow minds."  Miguel de Cervantes

"If Heaven exists, to know that there's laughter, that would be a great thing."  Robin Williams

"Laughter distances us from that which is ugly and therefore potentially distressing, and indeed enables us to obtain paradoxical pleasure and therapeutic benefit from it." Miguel de Cervantes

"The duty of comedy is to correct men by amusing them." Moliere

I not only admire Dorothy Parker for her extremely quick wit - not all of those pithy quotable quotations could have been thought up in advance and dumped into a conversation as necessary - but also because she had the guts to say them out loud. She, and others like her who work in and through humor and satire, actually say what people around them are thinking, but are too polite, too scared, too whatever, to put it all out in front of the world.  We need good satire and humor. We need bad satire and humor as well, but the good stuff.... that'll last.
