Shabbat Shalom
From Rav Tomer Ronen
This morning, I spoke to the students about the interesting connection between this week's parsha, Metzorah, and the upcoming holiday of Pesach. Last week, we had discussed how tzaraat was a punishment or warning for lashon harah. This week, I explained that there are actually three different types of tzaraat:
tzaraat in your house, your clothing, and your body. Each level serves as an increasing warning to examine your behavior when it comes to lashon harah and work to change it. If not, then the afflicted individual is removed from the community and put in exile for seven days to do teshuvah.

This week, we made the connection that the themes of tzaraat and Pesach both relate to our use of speech, one negative and one positive. The name of the chag evokes this as well: PEH (mouth) SACH (conversation). The main focus of the holiday of Pesach is around telling the story of our people's exodus from Egypt and passing the narrative of this defining and unifying moment down through the generations. This is an example of speech being used in a positive, productive, and empowering way.

We see from Parshat Metzorah that speech is a particularly powerful and potent tool and that the harm that can be done through it can be serious enough to warrant exclusion from the community. So too, through the holiday of Pesach, we see that speech can be just as powerful in a positive way, as it is essential to the strength and unity of our people.

Speaking of the power of speech, I shared the following tradition from my own family with the students today: In my family, every single person at the seder, from the youngest to the oldest, shares a dvar Torah. I asked each one of our BPY students to make an effort to do the same at the sedarim they attend. Please encourage your children to do so and share the results with me! I always love receiving emails from parents and grandparents after Pesach letting me know how our students contributed to the sedarim. Please accept my best wishes for a chag kasher v'sameach, full of the positive power of speech.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rav Tomer Ronen
Math Team Wins Second Place!
Congratulations to BPY's junior high math team, who won SECOND PLACE at this week's Math Masters Tournament at Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy! In addition to the team prize, Benjamin Shalumov earned a second place individual prize in the seventh grade competition and Maya Rubenstein placed third in the eighth grade individual competition! We are so proud of our students and grateful to our wonderful BPY math coaches, Ms. Berg and Morah Dina! Kol hakavod!

Third Grade Rashi Breakfast
BPY third graders and their parents or special guests participated in an amazing multimedia Rashi Breakfast program this week! Highlights included beautiful student projects, incredible dramatic videos illustrating different Rashi commentaries the students had learned, and a special opportunity to learn together. What a wonderful morning! Kol hakavod to the kitah gimmel morot and students on a fabulous presentation!

Early Childhood Matzah Factory
Ready, set, go!  Early childhood students had a blast racing the clock to prepare their own matzot in less than 18 minutes as part of the Living Legacy Matzah Factory program! They learned all about the process of making matzah, from the time the wheat is harvested to the baking of the finished product. What wonderful experiential learning!

Circus "Grand" Night Out
The BPY Grandparents Association hosted a wonderful, fun " Circus Grand Night Out" last Sunday for nearly 200 grandparents, parents, and students in grades K-8. The evening featured face painting, arts and crafts, a photo booth, and the awe-inspiring stunts and  circus performance of Joshua J. Superstar!  A special thank you to  Areyvut, a fantastic non-profit organization dedicated to infusing the lives of Jewish youth and teens with chesed, tzedakah, and tikkun olam, for joining us at the  Circus Grand Night Out to educate attendees about chesed clowns and the countless opportunities to get involved.

We look forward to seeing you at the next Grandparents Association special event!

Matan Bat Mitzvah Program Concludes
Over the past few months, sixth grade girls and their mothers have been participating in the Matan Bat Mitzvah Program, led by Morah Yael and Morah Dina. The program focused on notable women in Jewish history - including Rivka, Devorah, Esther, Dona Gracia, and Anne Frank - and included text-based Torah learning combined with creative hands-on projects and experiences. For the final session this past Sunday, the group learned about Eshet Chayil and then enjoyed a Paint With Me! session where they created a two part tree-scape, signifying that all the women they studied are part of their roots as Jewish women today.

Thank you to Shani Weinstock and Shoshana Glickman for helping to coordinate logistics for the program. Thank you to BPY librarian Susan Levin for helping us identify additional sources to enrich the content. Thank you to the mothers and daughters who came with their positive spirit and enthusiasm to each and every session and, of course, a very special thank you to Morah Dina and Morah Yael for going above and beyond to make this experience incredibly meaningful and fun for all of the participants! Zachinu !
Sixth Grade Mesibat Siyum
BPY sixth graders celebrated their completion of Masechet Megillah with a special mesibat siyum barbecue earlier this week! They played games related to the masechet and engaged in a friendly competition between the two classes - all in Hebrew! Kol hakavod to Rav Ariel and all of our sixth graders on this incredible accomplishment!

Tzeydah LaDerech
This week, BPY eighth graders had the privilege of learning with Rabbi Chaim Poupko, BPY parent and Associate Rabbi at Congregation Ahavath Torah in Englewood. Rabbi Poupko and the students explored the meaning of kedusha and the lesson from Rav Kook that true kedusha can only happen with other people. Thank you Rabbi Poupko for this enlightening lesson!

This Week In BPY's Science Discovery Room...
Fifth graders headed back out into the Van Saun Mill Brook this week to collect water samples which they analyzed in the lab to determine the health of the ecosystem. They also collected samples from the stormwater runoff pipes that drain into the brook. Stay tuned for their results...

Around BPY Early Childhood...
Gan Keshet did a science experiment, entirely in Hebrew, inspired by Pesach. On  Pesach, we dip a vegetable in salt water so the students  filled two jars with water and added salt to one jar. They hypothesized  what would happen if they dropped an egg into both jars. The egg sank in the fresh  water, but floated in the salt water. They learned that the egg is "heavier" then the fresh water,  but when we add the salt to the water, the salt makes the water "heavier" than the egg.

Around BPY Elementary School...
Second graders played a great game to practice identifying, exchanging, and counting pennies, nickels, and dimes. The students took turns rolling dice and putting the corresponding number of pennies on their game boards. When they had enough pennies, they exchanged them for a nickel.... and when they had two nickels, they could exchange them for a dime. The first player to get 20 cents was the winner! All you need is dice and coins and you are all set to enjoy this fun game at home!

Around BPY Junior High...
After working with the watershed ambassador last week, sixth grade students went out in the river to collect samples and identify different macroinvertebrates. Students found many pollution tolerant and pollution somewhat tolerant macroinvertebrates and determined that the water in our stream is somewhat polluted. Students will go back out next week to the stream to collect more data and we will be discussing ways to help clean up and prevent pollution in the future.

Teach Children Our Spiritual Story
by Stanley Fischman
In a recent column, Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks writes about a message that Moshe Rabeinu taught our ancestors at the time of the exodus that reverberates all the way down to the present day. He begins by citing what Moshe did not say as the Children of Israel were about to leave Egypt and bondage.

There were no lectures about the values of freedom and liberty, nor was there the long view of what lay ahead of them - not even a hint about their lives in the Promised Land. He instead strongly posits a message to parents. The most important thing parents should bequeath to their children is their family story: through the family narrative children get " ...a stronger sense of control over their lives and a higher sense of self esteem."

This Rabbi Sacks learns from what Moshe actually did say to our....
