Historic Investment in Kidney Research

At a press conference held March 31, the Honourable Jane Philpott, Minister of Health, announced Canadians Seeking Solutions and Innovations to Overcome Chronic Kidney Disease (Can-SOLVE CKD) as one of five successful research networks to receive $12.5 million of funding through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR).

Can-SOLVE CKD is Canada's biggest effort to date to improve kidney health and the care of those with chronic kidney disease. Research will focus on a number of elements, including changes in care delivery, improvement of treatment therapies, and organ donation. Thanks to the efforts of researchers, The Kidney Foundation of Canada and Canadian Society of Nephrology, an additional $46.5 million has been raised by 30 organizations to support the project over five years.

Kidney Living - Special Research Issue

Through this special issue of Kidney Living, we are introducing you to some of the dedicated researchers across Canada who currently receive grant support from The Kidney Foundation. We often think of research as something that is beyond our understanding, but we've worked to demystify some of the research that is taking place across the Country.

Leaving preconceived notions at the door

Mindfulness meditation is a practice that allows one to purposefully pay attention to the present moment without judgment. It helps us to look at things with a new lens and change the way we typically see things. Much of our life is filled with worry about things that may never happen.

Renal Friendly Cooking

Renal dietitians from the Windsor Regional Hospital in partnership with The Kidney Foundation, hosted a cooking demonstration/tasting to help patients demystify the renal diet. There is no one renal diet, so it's important to show patients how they can incorporate these 'kidney friendly' foods into their daily routines. In the cooking demo, the dietitians provide examples of how the renal diet can be adapted into the various meal courses and in particular showed recipes that were appropriate for those who are cooking for only one or two people.
