Member Month- It's Crunch Time!!

March Membership Month has just a few days left!  We are waiving the join fee of US$40 and offering 10% off international dues. We are offering prizes for new members, renewing members, and member referrals.  So far the results have been good, and we have just under a week to really drive home the final push in this effort!

The theme of the March Member Month is "get moving and #createconnection." Prizes include FitBit Blazes for new members and referrers and pairs of New Balance 1500 shoes if we hit our 1500 member goal!

There is still time to promote Member Month and we have materials available on Leader Centre for your chapter or region to use.

Complete details and prize information can be found on Leader Centre.

Don't forget that your chapter is also eligible to select a member month of its own each year, as well. Chapters can select any month and the $40 fee will be waived for anyone who joins IABC and that chapter during that month. Chapter leaders can set up their chapter member month by selecting the Application Fee Waiver Request in the Member Dashboard.

LI Recap
The 2016 Leadership Institute brought together chapter leaders from around the world for two days of networking and leadership development. We've posted the session handouts and Immersion Exhibit posters on Leader Centre, for chapter leaders to view. Be sure to check out the IEB Chair's LI Rapido Recap, which includes Leader Survey insights.

Many attendees at 2016 LI expressed interest in new resources for Leader Centre. As a result, we've formed a Leader Centre Task Force  and they are hard at work evaluating the site and determining how to develop new tools to help with chapter management. We'll be highlighting those resources in future editions of Leader Letter

Stay tuned for more information about the 2017 LI!

Chapter Spotlight: IABC Kansas City
We asked the International Chapter of the Year, IABC Kansas City, to share some insight on how they prepared for the CMAs. Learn more about their chapter below, and be sure to check out a complete list of 2016 CMA winners on Leader Centre!
How did you approach entering the CMAs?
Entering the CMAs is never a choice for us, it’s a given. In fact it is part of the Past President’s position description. This year we took a realistic look at the eight categories and considered where we had the strongest stories to share. We did have some unique challenges which caused potential derailment of our efforts, but we were able to overcome them. We planned to enter at least four, because you have to enter four categories to be considered for Chapter of the Year. We settled on five categories to enter. As the leader of the award submissions, the Past President coordinates with other board members to complete the entries. It truly is a team effort, with other board members writing, proofing, and pulling reports with stats to share results and measurement. We focused on completing the submission as accurately and completely as possible, providing results that were in line with our stated objectives. As with any awards competition, the most important aspect is to fully read the award criteria and ensure your submission responds to all pieces of the stated criteria. Bottom line, you have to play to win!

The Kansas Chapter has won the most International Chapter of the Year awards, with seven wins. Why do you think your chapter has been so successful?
We are fortunate to have a very strong chapter, with long-term members who are engaged and help share the chapter’s history with new leaders. As a volunteer run organization, you can easily lose things when transitioning from one volunteer board member to the next. Prior leaders have put several tools in place to help facilitate transition and ensure we don’t reinvent the wheel each year. Those tools help us go beyond the basics to provide higher level programs and services. Additionally, we work very hard to engage our members, reaching out personally with a variety of ways to get involved, thus increasing loyalty as well as a new generation of leaders.

Any advice for other chapter leaders entering the CMAs?
Enter. Take the time to compete. Even if you only submit one entry, it is a valuable experience. Completing the entry process forces you to really evaluate what you are doing and why. It makes you look at your results and analyze your activities and programs. It is time-consuming so build it into your calendar. Start working on the CMAs early. Set aside a spot to save your samples and results as you go through the year so you have it readily available when it comes time to prepare your submission. Get together a team to help with the submission. Review past winners' submissions for ideas and best practices (this is a great practice even to get new ideas on regular board activities). Then when you win, leverage that credibility in your retention and recruitment campaigns. Oh, and don’t forget to leave space in your suitcase or carryon for the award(s).
