We are excited to welcome back Major Sam Cochran, a nationally known expert in the field of crisis intervention, to the 2016 NAMI California Annual Conference as a guest speaker in the criminal justice track.

Major Cochran, who retired from the Memphis Police Department after more than 30 years of service, was the initial  coordinator of the department's Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) as well as coordinator of the Hostage Negotiation Team and Critical Incident Services During his time as a law enforcement officer, he served in uniform patrol, in the investigative division, and as an instructor at the training academy. 

Major Cochran has worked with police departments throughout the nation and in Canada, Australia and England. His passion is foremost in working with communities to better understand, promote, develop and implement the CIT model in an effort to reduce unnecessary incarcerations, injuries and deaths. 

NAMI has named its annual law enforcement advocacy award after Major Cochran. In addition, he received the City University of New York John Jay College of Criminal Justice Law Enforcement News Person of the Year Award in 2000. Major Cochran  holds a master's degree in political science and criminal justice from the University of Southern Mississippi.

NAMI California is pleased to offer scholarships to attend our 2016 Annual Conference  for adults and young adults ages 18-24.  If you feel you would benefit from this educational conference and cannot afford the registration fee, please download the appropriate application at the links below and submit by May 6, 2016. The NAMI California Board of Directors will review all scholarship applications and make selections on or before June 3, 2016.
 
Please note: Scholarships do not include travel expenses or hotel accommodations. You must be a member of a NAMI affiliate in California to apply.

Candidates  For Board Of Directors
 
NAMI California is now accepting nominations for our Board of Directors. Board candidates will be voted on by members at the Annual Conference and serve three-year terms. We are seeking qualified candidates who have experience as an individual or family member living with mental illness, knowledge of mental health policy, insight into nonprofit organizational structure, and/or legal, financial or fundraising experience. Board candidates must share a commitment to help all those affected by mental illness and a passion for NAMI California's mission.
