Youth Philanthropists Award Tempo $5,000 Highland Street Foundation Grant

Wayside Youth & Family Support Network's Tempo
Young Adult Resource Center was chosen to receive a $5,000 grant from the Highland Street Foundation thanks to the Boys and Girls Club of MetroWest.

Every year the Highland Street Foundation works with local youth groups to develop a youth philanthropy group.  This year they worked with the Boys & Girls Club of MetroWest. The students took part in a 3-month course on nonprofits, including filing to become a nonprofit and board members budgets.

After the course ended they are given the opportunity to visit local nonprofits in their communities to and see the agencies "in action." Chris Duane, Senior Vice President of Operations at BCG MetroWest helped the youth identify Tempo Young Adult Resource Center in the community and the rest was history!

Tempo plans to use the funds to facilitate a young adult support group and offer healthy activities for young adults living in recovery from substance abuse/use.

"A young adult once told me that he came to Tempo because he had to learn how to have fun while sober", said Yolanda Ortiz, MSW, Tempo Program Director. "These funds help make it possible to continue to support the vulnerable young adults that turn to Tempo."

The Highland Street Youth Philanthropy Initiative (HSYPI) is a program for middle, high school, and college-aged youth that engages and empowers them to collectively choose and fund nonprofit organizations that are addressing the most pressing community and societal needs.
