BANNER HELPS KICK OFF National Park Service Rx Day
Come to the 1800 block of Lester and join your neighbors, the Uof A Vets Club and Banner staff to celebrate  the Nationa Parks Rx Day.
TAKE A WALK NOT A PILL
Not always that easy for sure, but there is research to say that exercise prevents illness-enough so the National Park Service and the Surgeon General of the US have banded together to encourage parks and walking.

NATIONAL PARKS
Rx DAY
Walk, run, bike the East Loop
Start at 9am with some short speeches (of course). See historic photos set up in the park and then celebrate Sunday morning with a brisk walk. Bring the whole family.

or sit in the park on Sunday and cheer on the Vets, the Doc and the walkers.

THE SUNDAY WALK WILL be west on Lester, north on Mountain, east on Edison, and south on the Campbell access Road.
If you don't walk...wave as the Vets and intrepid health walkers speed or saunter by!   Click here for the event flyer.
PARK AVENUE NEWS: Park is under construction beginning mid April.  The bikeway and pedestrian amenities are beginning there as a result of a 5-neighborhood Enhancement Grant.  Jefferson Park becomes more walkable by the day!
HAMPTON AT GRANT PARTIAL CLOSURE

Residents in the northwest corner of the neighborhood have endured cut-through traffic from Grant Road and Euclid for some time now. They expect it to increase with the widening of Grant Road.  Affected neighbors signed a petition for a closure.  After review by the city, it was determined that, due to emergency vehicle access, only a partial is possible.  It is expected that when the basin project is completed (18 months) the chicane will be installed.  Thank you to WARD III and the CDOT engineers.

Exciting Possibilities for Grant Road
"Grant Road Heritage Landscape Corridor" proposal on-line now
Suppose that the orphan remnants along Grant Road were turned into a "Heritage Landscape Corrridor" for the Tucson Community complete with bike and walking pathways?  Suppose that, in Jefferson Park, the corridor linked up with the Jefferson Park's emerging Health/History Loop?

Grant Road Coalition wrote the proposal - click here to read. Coalition members visited all City Council Members and the Mayor.  With the following results:
1) The open space vision appealed to the council...but what about $$?
2) Council Person Uhlich arranged a  meeting with the RTA and  the city Engineers.
3) A possible grant opportunity with the National Park Service Rx emerged.
4) Sale of the orphan remnants from Park to Santa Rita will be put on hold as we all work together to make the vision possible.  To see the minutes of the meeting click here.

It is possible.  And as everyone works together it becomes probable.  People in all  four neighborhoods of the "Central Segments" (JP, SAMOS, Catalina Vista, and Campbell/Grant) are working together to find opportunities.  Join us at the meetings posted to grantroadcoalition.com.

GREEN COLUMN
Neighborhood Plant Exchange - April 27 - 6pm!
APRIL 27, 6pm at WARD III -  It's SPRING! Bring your extra seedlings, vegetables or flowers, your succulent shoots, your use-able pots and exchange them for others or just give 'em away.  It's a friendly swap time!  We thank our local Sprouts Farmers Market for donating a $30 gift certificate and a plant to raffle. Refreshments will be served.  Watch for a reminder door hanger.  See you there!
"EDISON PLAZA" - A GREEN COMMITTEE PROJECT
Members of the Green Committee  will  be working in the neighborhood.  Several projects are being considered: another water  retention  basin on Vine, cleaning the right-of-ways in front of homes (that little strip before the curb) and buffel grass eradication.  If you see folks working stop and say "Hi".  Questions? Joan Hall 990-8054 or e-mail  [email protected]

The lovely park at the east end of Edison where it turns into Campbell access road is worth a stroll.  Thank you new neighbor, Ricardo and friend Angela, for the recent clean up. Ricardo joined the Green Committe and has wasted no time!  They dubbed it "Edison Plaza" and the name seems to fit!

Illegal Dumping - Notes from the Neighborhood Information Meeting
Edison Alley February 2016
ILLEGAL DUMPING IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD!
The W3NA Program about Illegal Dumping was highly successful, in my opinion. Three guests from the City joined us and gave an overview of the problem and answered questions. The guests were Assistant City Manager Albert Elias, Environmental Services Director Andrew Quigley, and Code Enforcement Supervisor Rick Saldate (filling in for Interim Head of Code Enforcement Michael Wyneken who was unavailable due to a death in the family).

Illegal dumping is an ongoing problem in some neighborhoods, most notably in high-rental areas with frequent turnover. When tenants move, they sometimes leave unwanted furniture, mattresses, etc. at the curb or in the alley. If no one assumes responsibility, it becomes "Orphan Trash." Sometimes it remains for months.

The five key things I learned were:
  1. For orphan trash, it is best to call Environmental Services (ES) first 791-3175. They will do what they can to remedy the situation. If for some reason they cannot, they will turn it over to Code Enforcement (CE). CE has a proscribed process of inspect/notify/reinspect/. . . /cite, which can be a time consuming process, especially if it ends up in court.
  2. ES operators will begin reporting problems they see while on their routes.
  3. ES & CE are working with the City IT department to get mobile apps to improve their efficiency.
  4. Recycling is not generating any revenue at this time. A recycling surcharge is being considered to make up for this loss. The surcharge will be adjusted downward as revenue increases. (ES rates haven't been raised since 2010.)
  5. CE receives 10-11 thousand complaints per year. Most are resolved, with only ~250 ending up in court.                                                 (Thank you Sandra Miller  of W3NA)
