What is breast density? By Dr. Steven Theil, Suburban Radiologic Consultants

Dr. Steven Theil is physician at Suburban Radiologic Consultants who specializes in breast imaging and diagnostic breast procedures.

Screening Mammography and Breast Density

In August of 2014, Minnesota became the 16th state to require mammography providers to notify women if they have dense breast tissue.  Breast density can only be determined by a mammogram and does not correspond to the way your breasts may feel.

Breast tissue density on screening mammograms is determined by a radiologist.  A radiologist is a doctor who specializes in medical imaging.   About half of women will have dense tissue when they have a screening mammogram.

There are four categories of breast density ranging from not very dense to extremely dense.  Below are some mammogram pictures showing examples of the density categories.  All of these are normal.  A woman's breast density tends to decrease as she ages.

Congratulations! 90 years of service

Four employees were recently honored at Southdale ObGyn's annual holiday party for their dedication and years of service.  Congratulations to Cindy Weldon (35 years), Dr. Deborah Davenport (25 years), JeMae Guertin (15 years) and Jeanne Hartwig (15 years).  We are proud and grateful for their contributions to our clinic and our patients.

Cindy Weldon, LPN is our Pap smear and mammogram results coordinator.  Her job is to work closely with our providers in managing Pap smear and mammogram results, notifying patients of test results and recommendations for follow up and scheduling appointments. She has the most years of service of any employee in Southdale ObGyn's history.  Cindy's experience is a valuable asset as she has worked in several positions over her 35 years.  She understands the needs and concerns of our patients.  Dr. Deborah Davenport started her career with Southdale ObGyn and continues to provide exceptional gyn and ob care. She is consistently named on "Top Docs" lists published by local magazines.   JeMae Guertin, RN works in our triage department answering patient calls and facilitating communication between providers and patients.   Some of you have probably appreciated JeMae's calm and helpful support over the phone. Jeanne Hartwig, LPN and Certified Instructor teaches a variety of childbirth and family education classes exclusively for Southdale ObGyn.  Her love for teaching and our patients is evident by the attendance at her popular, fun and educational classes.  Congratulations to all!
