April 2016
Every Day is Earth Day

Every year Earth Day comes and goes without much fanfare in Steamboat because of our late spring break and the mass exodus after the mountain closes to warmer climes and dry trails. You can still pay tribute to the planet and learn more about all the exciting environmental conservation going on in our valley during YVSC's month-long Every Day is Earth Day  celebration. The festivities kick-off on Earth Day with a reusable shopping bag giveaway followed by a fun used clothing fashion show as part of April's Talking Green, an electronics recycling collection, and a wide range of other environmental events offered by YVSC and many other community partners. For more on Earth Month events, please read on.

I hope you'll attend one of the many sustainability-focused events this month. There's truly something for everyone! And, I urge you to celebrate Earth Day every day of the year!

Earth Month Events

April 22 - May 24

April 22 marks the 46th Anniversary of Earth Day, and this year's theme is "Trees for the Earth." Trees help sequester carbon, improve air and water quality, and beautify our communities, so it's only appropriate that YVSC will be kicking off our ReTree Steamboat season during Earth Month. On May 13, YVSC and Colorado State Forest Service will work with the North Routt Community Charter School to plant seedlings around their school followed by a planting at Steamboat Springs High School on May 18.

During our month-long Every Day is Earth Day celebration, YVSC hopes to raise awareness of local events and environmental projects, and encourages YOU to do your part, even if you're on the road for spring break. View the YVSC calendar of upcoming events that honor our planet at www.yvsc.org/earthday.

Sponsored by YVSC, Alpine Bank, G & S Recycling and Lightworks.

Important information about recycling fluorescent light bulbs:
Remember when upgrading to new energy-saving, long-lasting LED bulbs, that old CFL bulbs need to be recycled properly since CFLs contain a small amount of mercury. Lightworks of Steamboat on Loggers Lane accepts all fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent lights for proper recycling to capture the mercury in their "bulb eater." Lightworks charges nominal fees to business recyclers to help fund the program.
2nd Annual School Waste-Free Lunch Challenge

To celebrate Earth Month, YVSC is challenging students (and p arents) at local schools to a week of Waste-Free lunches May 2 - 6, 2016. The school with the least trash per student over the course of the week will win a prize for their school.

At the end of the school lunch period, the primary items in the trashcan are Ziploc bags and disposable t
