Location of Ending the Silence In Person Training

NAMI CA is excited to announce that over the next several months, we will be hosting in-person Ending the Silence presenter trainings! These in-person training events are required for any affiliate that does not currently offer the program and wishes to start it.  For affiliates that already offer the program, presenters may be trained online through the online E-Learning process. For affiliates that do not currently offer it and take the in-person training, they can then have presenters trained online.

We invite you to complete this survey to let us know if your affiliate is interested in having an in-person ETS training in your area. This is a wonderful opportunity to start the program and have presenter teams trained alongside your designated ETS Coordinator. We plan to offer at least 1 training this Spring, and at least 2 more in Summer/Fall.

Please complete the survey to let us know if your community is in need for this training. For questions, please contact Erik Villalobos, Education Coordinator, at [email protected]
E-Learning Now Available for Ending the Silence

Ending the Silence, one of NAMI California's most widely used programs, now has a new training format available for affiliates. Affiliates already running the program can offer new presenters training through an e-learning program developed by NAMI. This program will allow on-demand training to meet the needs of busy schedules and will record when the training program is completed and a presenter is ready for the next phase of training.

Please review the process for obtaining e-learning in California. If your affiliate has presenters ready for training, please follow the process outlined in the guide (link below). If you have questions, please contact Erik Villalobos at [email protected].

For affiliates that do not already offer the program, NAMI California will be hosting in-person ETS trainings this spring. Please stay tuned for more information as details become available!

Upcoming Training Opportunities

Below is the schedule for NAMI California Education and Support Group Programs.
Trainings are announced in this weekly report and the namica.org  website.

Applications are now being received for the following Family Program Education Trainings:
  • February 20-22:  Family Support Group Modesto
  • March: Family-to-Family Ventura
  • April: Basics and Family-to-Family Ontario
Applications are now being received for the following Peer Program Trainings*:
  • February: Connection - Southern California, location to be announced soon
  • March: Peer-to-Peer - Ventura
  • No IOOV trainings are scheduled by NAMI California at this time
*Important Note:   There will be additional trainings offered for all the programs above. These workshops will be hosted by affiliates and sponsored by NAMI California in the form of small grants. Interested affiliates should contact [email protected] for details on how to apply for a grant. Trainings will be announced in your region as they become available.

NAMI support group trainings are for NAMI members to become facilitators of a support group. The education trainings are for members desiring to become teachers or mentors of an education program. Upon graduation, the affiliate makes arrangements with the graduate to teach the class.

Qualifications for training: Interested parties should be NAMI members in good standing and ideally have graduated from the same education program they intend to teach. A participant also needs to be recommended by their local NAMI chapter. Additional qualifications will apply. Please ask your NAMI affiliate to contact Family and Peer Programs Supervisor, Lynn Cathy at [email protected]   or Erik Villalobos, Education Coordinator at  [email protected] to receive an application via email. Prospective teachers/facilitators should return their applications in a timely manner as these workshops fill quickly.

Seeking Candidates for  NAMI National Training of Trainers

NAMI California is reviewing applications for candidates for this year's NAMI Training of Trainers workshops, which will be held April 22-25 in Arlington, Virginia. State trainers are able to lead workshops to train teachers to present programs or facilitators to lead support groups.

If your affiliate would like to propose a candidate, one of the items needed to complete registration for your trainee is a letter of recommendation from the executive director at NAMI California.  The team at NAMI California will review all applications to ensure candidates meet the criteria for the trainings. If the candidate is approved, NAMI California will write a letter of support.

Please download the state trainer description and application below:

Steps to propose a candidate for the NAMI National Trainings:
  1. Identify a candidate for the Training of Trainers if you wish to have a teacher, mentor, or facilitator trained.
  2. Complete the NAMI California state trainer application and return no later than January 31.
  3. The candidate will then be reviewed and may take part in a brief (5-10 minute) phone interview with NAMI California staff.
  4. A letter of support will be created recommending the candidate for training. This letter will be emailed to the registrant and to his/her affiliate.
  5. The candidate will then be ready to complete the application process with NAMI, and can submit this letter along with the other registration materials required.
  6. For further information about the National Training of Trainers, please go to www.nami.org/ttinfo
The due date for your affiliate to submit your candidate's application to NAMI California is  January 31, 2016.  The deadline for NAMI to receive ALL registration materials is March 4, 2016.

Please note: Estimated costs for sending a candidate to the training could be $1,000 or more (with the round trip flight to Virginia, the training registration fee, hotel, etc.). Each affiliate submitting a request for a candidate's recommendation letter should be aware that NAMI California does not have the funds to supplement the cost of this training.

If you have any questions in regards to this process, please contact Lynn Cathy at   [email protected]  or  (916) 567-0163.
