My name is John Beers. I was a 1lb 9oz preemie. I was in the intensive care nursery for six months after I was born. When I came home I weighed six pounds. In elementary school, I feel off a slide and found out the I had a detached retina in my left eye.I have been blind in my left eye since I was 8 years old.
I started participating in Special Olympics in high school. Over the years I have participated in cross country skiing, snowshoeing, athletics, soccer and cross country running. I am also a trained Global Messenger.
When I started in cross country running I did the 1500M and later the 3000M. I am not a fast runner - but I always finish any race that I start!
I have also participated in the Healthy Atheltes program. Over the years, I have recieved regular glasses, sport glasses, swim goggles and sunglasses...all free of charge!
