Teach NJS is hosting a Teaneck School Board Candidates Forum

Monday evening, October 26th, 2015 at 7:45 PM
at Congregation Bnai Yeshurun, 641 West Englewood Avenue, Teaneck

Come and meet the candidates running for the Teaneck School Board and hear their stance on the importance of a strong public school system, property taxes, sp
ecial education and busing for eligible students. These are only a few of the topics that will be discussed that evening. This is an important opportunity to be SEEN and HEARD by local school board candidates.

For more information please contact [email protected].

Shabbat Shalom
From Rav Tomer Ronen

This morning, I asked our fifth graders what they would say if I put a beautiful, elaborate cake (like one of the cakes from Cake Boss) in front of them and told them that it  just appeared out of nothing - that no one created it, it just happened. Of course, they replied that they would tell me that wasn't possible. I agreed, explaining that cakes like the ones featured on many television shows require an incredible amount of planning, creativity, thought, and execution by people (sometimes by large groups of them) working together over many weeks.

I further explained that Avraham Avinu went through this same process when he looked around and saw the beautiful world around him, full of trees, fruit, flowers, animals, rivers, mountains, and people. He realized that all of this could not simply have happened on its own. It was when he was searching for an explanation that Hashem started speaking to him and revealed Himself as the Creator of the world.

Last Sunday, hundreds of members of the BPY family gathered together to celebrate our Chanukat Habayit and the purchase of our permanent home. This too was a momentous achievement that did not simply happen on its own. The purchase of our building was the result of years of  planning, forethought, hard work, and generosity on the part of many, many people - guided by Hashem's love and faith to see it through.Todah rabbah to everyone who played a role in the realization of this dream and to our Creator, who blessed us and brought us to this day.

At the same time that we are celebrating our home here, our home in Israel is under attack. I hope that many BPY parents and staff members will join us THIS SUNDAY AT 8PM, to show their support for Israel and hear from Miriam Peretz, whose family has sacrificed so much to keep Israel safe and who will speak to us about the current situation there. Please see the flyer below for more information - this community event is free and open to everyone so spread the word and bring your friends. Please join me in praying for a swift end to the violence and peace for all.

With best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom,
Rav Tomer Ronen
Rosh HaYeshiva

Other highlights included bounce houses, face painting, mezuzah making, other crafts, parent/child soccer, a petting zoo and more!

A huge thank you to Rachel Weiss, Director of Development, and the event planning committee for organizing this wonderful event!

Todah rabbah and kol hakavod to the Shorashim Capital Campaign committee chaired by Daniel Cohen and all to of our generous donors for making the dream of a permanent home for BPY a reality!

Discovery Learning Day Video:
How Do YOU Measure Up?
For our first Discovery Learning Day of the year (which took place during Chol Hamoed Sukkot) BPY elementary school students researched the amazing talents of different animals and then ESTIMATED, MEASURED, and COMPARED their own abilities in these areas. View this video to see more!

A Parenting Paradigm Shift: Part II
by Stanley Fischman
Last week, I wrote about Dr. Kim Gile's article, "Being a Better Parent."She stressed that parents should try to avoid exercising control over their children and should be less scared and more loving. Her favorite author, Dr.
Shefali Tsabary, suggests that
parents respond to this challenge by first realizing that they really have only two options and can be in one of two places in terms of their child-rearing at any given moment: 1) "fear energy - coming from a place of protecting, controlling, telling, probing, demanding and needing in order to calm your fears" or 2) "love energy - coming from a place of calming, offering, listening, honoring, respecting, caring and giving in order to serve and lift others."

#Not2Tough2Tutu
BPY eighth graders are #Not2Tough2Tutu! After learning about the science behind cancer and different cancer treatments for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, BPY eighth graders participated in A.C. Moore's #Not2Tough2Tutu campaign to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Looking good eighth grade!

Generations of Israel
On Thursday morning, BPY welcomed a student delegation from Ben Gurion University of the Negev. The university students are in the U.S. through the Generations of Israel program. They visited various BPY classes and led small groups of junior high students in discussion sessions focused on Israeli innovations, interpersonal relationships, places in Israel, and Israeli experiences (all conducted in Hebrew of course!).

AJ Edelman
Modern Orthodox athlete and Jewish day school graduate AJ Edelman visited with junior high students this morning to tell them about his journey as an athlete and his chosen sport, skeleton. AJ is training to compete in the 2018 Winter Olympics as part of the Israeli delegation. He described skeleton (which involves sledding down a curving track at 90 mph with your chin less than 1 inch from the ice), shared the special equipment he uses, and answers many questions the students had. He even let students try out his sled and handle all of his gear. Thank you AJ for visiting with us and thank you to AJ's cousin, BPY parent JJ Weinstein, for organizing this fascinating and inspiring presentation!

Getting Ready for Our River Clean Up
Thank you to the incredible volunteers from the Teaneck Creek Conservancy and Morah Jean's family who came out to prepare and mark the trails for our River Clean Up and Trail Making Event on November 1. Elementary school students joined later in the week - helping to locate garbage that needs to be removed and identifying the trail markers.

All BPY families are encouraged to come out on Sunday, November 1 from 12-3 PM to help clean up the woods and river and create trails so that our students can access this beautiful learning environment more easily. Wear long pants and sleeves and sturdy shoes - pizza will be served! (see below for more information)
Coming Soon:
The Discovery Room YouTube Channel
Morah Jean Myers, BPY's Elementary School Science Specialist, is working with grades 2-5 to create interactive animal exhibits in our Discovery Room. The students are researching the animals and making their own posters and videos to share their findings. The videos will be available on the BPY Discovery Room's very own YouTube channel. Stay tuned....

Around BPY

Water, water, everywhere!
Kindergartners used Parshat Noach as as a  jumping off point to learn about water in different ways. Gan Ilanot studied the different oceans and learned what makes each one unique - then they painted their own oceans! Gan Chaverim learned how water gets into our houses and constructed their own pipes using paper towel and toilet paper rolls. Gan Keshet made their own boats out of tinfoil and then tested their strength by floating them in water and adding extra weight with pennies.

Second graders have been focused on creating a caring and effective classroom community. They created a big chart to keep track of all their positive classroom behaviors and marked each one with a colorful sticker. To celebrate completing their first chart, they celebrated with a pajama party in school!

Junior high students started electives last week with yearbook, nature, running, photography, basketball, mishmar and art.

Voting Reminder from Teach NJS
GET OUT AND VOTE!!!

Teach  NJS, a partnership of 20 day schools, 2 Federations and the Orthodox Union Advocacy Center, reminds YOU to Get Out and Vote on  November 3, 2015. Polls are open from  6AM to  8PM

This year is the first time since 1999 that the State Assembly is the highest office on the ballot. It is anticipated that the statewide turnout will be less than 20%. This gives our community a unique opportunity to be noticed and heard if everyone comes out and votes. This will increase our chance for successfully advocating for increased funding from Trenton for our children's education.

Can't make it to the polling station on  November 3rd? No problem! Please click on the link below to request an absentee ballot form to be sent directly to your home. The deadline to apply is on  Tuesday, October 27thPlease click here:
