April 2016
LETTER FROM THE MAYOR
A note of gratitude

As I sat down to write a letter to you about April in Milton, I couldn't help but feel the true sorrow from losing one of our own Milton family members, Milton Firefighter Richard Bishop. We are grateful for his service and ask that you please keep his wife and daughters in your thoughts and prayers.

In times of celebration and tragedy, Milton pulls together.

My door is always open to your concerns, questions and comments. Be sure to take some time this month to stop by.

Sincerely,

Mayor Joe Lockwood

Earth Day Festival
April 23
Join us on Saturday, April 23 from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Milton's 7th Annual Earth Day Festival! For the seventh year, the  City of Milton,  Milton Grows Greenand local sponsors bring this free, fun, springtime event to the community.

Bring your family, friends and neighbors to learn about easy green practices, enjoy music, activities and games, craft stations, animal encounters and delicious food. Many local vendors will be on hand with information about earth-friendly products and services.

A note from Fire Chief Robert Edgar
It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that the City of Milton has suffered a tragic loss with the passing of Milton Firefighter Richard Bishop. Richard had been with our fire department since 2013 and had proudly served the citizens of this city. Richard had been named firefighter of the quarter in 2014 and his station, Engine 42 B-Shift, was named Crew of the Year in 2015. He will be truly missed.

In addition to his fire department family, Richard leaves behind his wife and their two daughters. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Fire Chief Robert Edgar

SPOTLIGHTS

VETERANS REGISTRATION

We need your help adding to our database of veterans from Milton, both living and fallen, who served in the armed forces. Information on fallen veterans will be assembled and retained by the city as a means of documenting the proud heritage of Milton citizens in service to our country and also for certain memorial observances that may, from time to time, be sponsored by the city. This information will be used to, for instance, place an advertisement in the paper recognizing and listing the name of each Milton living veteran in November for Veterans Day and in May recognizing our fallen veterans for Memorial Day.

GREENSPACE COMMUNITY MEETINGS

Join the Milton Planning Commission for a series of meetings and workshops to help determine what standards we should look at for preserving greenspace in our community. The city wants public input on the future direction of land protection, trails, rural views, parks and passive recreation areas that would benefit you.

So, come out to one or all of the following Planning Commission meetings and work sessions to have your say on this important topic:
  • April 14, Thursday, at 7 p.m., City Hall Executive Conference Room (work session)
  • April 27, Wednesday, at 7 p.m., City Hall Council Chambers

Help promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by donating your gently used nearly new professional attire to the Milton Runway Production's "Suit Drive" as you arrive at the event.

Milton Runway Productions is a student organization at Milton High School founded to explore the business behind fashion. This club is composed of several hardworking members with the mutual love for fashion, and the interworking of the businesses behind it.  In an effort to explore this passion the club has worked this year to produce Milton's First Annual Spring Fashion Show to raise money and awareness for the Atlanta chapter of Dress for Success.

Dress for Sucess promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of care and career development tools to help them thrive in work and life. A portion of the proceeds from ticket, food truck and boutique sales will be donated along with donations collected in the "suit drive" during the show.
