Letter from the Dean

Today our society faces serious, interrelated, and large-scale challenges - violence, substance abuse, environmental degradation, injustice, isolation and inequality. We need social workers' unique blend of scientific knowledge and caring practice to tackle our nation's toughest problems. Led by the American Academy of Social Work & Social Welfare Grand Challenges, are a call to action asking social workers to come together to look for answers powered by science.

The  Grand Challenges for Social Work is a dynamic social agenda, focused on improving individual and family well-being, strengthening the social fabric, and helping create a more just society. Here at SSW we are deeply involved.  I am a coauthor on the " Reversing Extreme Inequality " challenge, Brad Zebrack and Mike Spencer are coauthors with the, " Health Equity: Eradicating Health Inequalities for Future Generations ". Many of our SSW faculty are working on other Grand Challenges projects and groups.

Finding Quality Field Placements
A Growing Challenge
Associate Clinical Professor of Social Work and Director of Field Instruction Elizabeth (Betsy)Voshel works with nearly 700 students who require field placements as part of their curriculum within the U-M School of Social Work.  "As seasoned social workers retire, they leave a gap in the training market, which becomes a challenge when finding quality placements for our students," Voshel explains.  "Our graduates are getting jobs quickly and getting promoted even more quickly, but they're less likely to take on a MSW student to train because they're learning their requirements of their new job and may be overwhelmed."

Innovative Service Delivery Models
2015 Fauri Memorial Conference

The Fauri Memorial Conference is presented annually in recognition of former University of Michigan School of Social Work Dean and Vice President Fedele F. Fauri's accomplishment and leadership in child welfare.

The 2015 Fedele F. Fauri and Iris M. Fauri Memorial Conference "Innovative Service Delivery Models for Child Welfare: Promoting Positive Father Engagement" was held October 30, to highlight emerging best practices and practitioner expertise related to father engagement and inclusion in social services. Keynote speaker Jay Fagan, PhD, (Co-Director, Fatherhood Research and Practice Network and Professor of Social Work at Temple University) highlighted the gradual increase in fatherhood research and practice that serves low-income populations in the United States.
White House Poverty Proposal Inspired by Associate Professor Luke Shaefer's Research
Associate Professor Luke Schaefer's book "$2 a Day:  Living on Almost Nothing in America" (co-author Kathryn Edin), is a searing look at poverty in the United States told through compelling portraits of families and how they struggle to survive on near-zero incomes.  Shaefer's book has captured the attention of the media, the public and leading policy makers on Capitol Hill.

Harnessing the Power of Data to Help Vulnerable Children

There are major challenges facing child welfare and juvenile justice systems in the United States today.
Associate Professors Brian Perron and Joe Ryan are partnering with the State of Michigan to address these challenges and help vulnerable children.

Perron and Ryan co-direct the Child and Adolescent Data Lab  and partner with the State to provide crucial data. "Instead of creating "reports", we ask the State what questions do they need answered? Then we collect, collate and analyze large data sets from schools, health and human services and the juvenile justice system to answer their specific questions."

The State has access to increasing amounts of data about children but they don't have the expertise to merge their data and identify the real problems," said Joe Ryan, co-director of the lab.
Generosity that Inspires and Transforms

There is no shortage of role models within the SSW community who inspire us.  Thanks to the generosity of Annmarie and Neil Hawkins and Lila Swell, MSW '58, SSW students have received vital and welcome financial support.

The Rachael M. Hawkins Field Placement Travel Support Fund provides support to MSW students who may not be able to afford the travel expenses for their field work.  It is the hope of the Hawkins that their fund will encourage others to think about how they can make a difference in a re-emerging city like Detroit through the U-M School of Social Work.
The   Dr. Lila Swell Scholarship is  a bequest which will establish an endowed fund to support scholarships in the future for MSW students with a preference for students with a specialization in Interpersonal Practice.
"I left a bequest because I wanted to give  back to Michigan. I have never forgotten the impact that the School of Social Work has had on my life. Michigan helped me determine my life philosophy.  In today's world we focus on our weaknesses, rather than our strengths. Michigan helped me focus on an individual's strengths, and as a result, my teaching and my books are based on a positive health model."

Thank you for all you do to support our students and strengthen our school.
