Spring, Sip, Taste & Stroll

After a long winter, what could be better than strolling with friends and sampling beverages and food downtown? The Spring Sip, Taste & Stroll is a Downtown Partners fundraiser and takes place on Friday, April 29 from 5 to 8 PM. Join your friends and sample offerings from various wineries, distributors, and brewers at downtown businesses.

Discounted advance tickets are $15 at The Iowa Store or Weird Harold's, or online at GreaterBurlington.com. Tickets are $20 during the event at registration, located at the Iowa Store and at 500 Jefferson. A complimentary glass is included while supplies last. The event is open to those 21 or older. Parking Study Completed

After months of intensive work, the results of the downtown parking study will be presented to the City Council, the DPI board, and the Planning & Zoning Commission on Monday, April 11 at 4:30 PM at City Hall; the public is invited as well. The study was jointly funded by the City and Downtown Partners. It will prove to be an eye opener! The Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission deserves special recognition for their great effort in putting the study and recommendations together.
Commercial Space Open House
 
 
To assist downtown property owners, the DPI Business Development Committee is hosting a special Commercial Space Open House on Sunday, April 17 from 1 to 3 PM. It is free and open to the public. People interested in relocating, expanding, or opening a business in downtown Burlington will be able to visit available spaces and discuss the commercial opportunities. Stop by the lobby of the Burlington Apartments during the event to pick up a directory map to the available locations, as well as information about incentives, business support activities, and recent and future downtown projects.

The space must be in marketable condition, and the property owner or a knowledgeable representative must be on hand at the available site during the event to show the space and answer questions.
County Seat Project

The Downtown Partners Design Committee is seeking creative entries for the popular "County Seat Project" to decorate wooden benches to be placed around downtown. The Downtown Partners Design Committee will pick the best designs, and the winning entrants will paint the benches. Earth Day Clean Up

Participants of all ages are invited to come out for the 16th annual Earth Day Clean Up on Saturday, April 16. Volunteers can register at the Port of Burlington beginning at 8:30 AM to get t-shirts, trash bags and gloves. After going out to pick up litter throughout the community, they return to the Port for a free lunch, music, door prizes, and a group photo. Individuals, families, businesses, church groups, and organizations are all encouraged to lend a hand in caring for our piece of earth. For more information, call Eric Tysland at 319-753-8158.
Downtown Open 4 Business Competition
With Main Street Iowa and the Iowa Economic Development Authority, Downtown Partners presents the Open 4 Business competition for either a new or expanding for-profit business locating in the Main Street district. Each of the state's 52 Main Street organizations can submit one business concept. Three local applicants will pitch their business concepts to Downtown Partners, with the winner receiving a rental assistance grant if they open in downtown Burlington. In addition, they will go on to one of five regional competitions in June for a chance at $8000. The five finalists will present their ideas in a statewide contest in August for an additional $20,000 in funding.

In the past three decades, we have seen over $79 million in private property investment and acquisition and logged over 85,000 volunteer hours. As a supporter of downtown, YOU have played a part!

Decades of deferred maintenance have taken their toll on this once grand landmark, but we are working to change that. A structural assessment and design work are underway to address the longstanding roof issues, and lead and asbestos testing takes place this week. Stay tuned.
