It's Election Day: Go Vote!

Today is our chance to have our say in the 2016 provincial election. Polls are open until 8:00 p.m., and you can find details on polling stations and more from Elections Saskatchewan. If you're still on the fence, SUMA has lots of information on our website, and our platform grid covers how the parties' platforms stack up against what we were advocating for.

So go vote, and watch your mailbox later this week for a wrap-up message on our work during the campaign.

SUMA Workshop:
Creating and Enforcing Effective Bylaws

It's a real art to craft an effective bylaw. You need to address municipal concerns, but avoid a bylaw for all the tiny irritations you see in your municipality. And then you have to enforce those carefully drafted bylaws. SUMA invites you to a workshop in Regina on just these topics. Join us from 1:30-4:30 on May 10, 2016 to hear what works from a panel of experts in municipal administration and law, and ensure that your bylaws are addressing the needs of your community. Registration is open to all SUMA members, for $50 per person

Village Sector Meeting 2016

Following a very successful 2015 Town Sector Meeting, SUMA has decided to host a similar event for the village sector.

The 2016 Village Sector Meeting will take place on May 10 and 11, 2016, in Regina, bringing together mayors, councillors, and administrators from villages and resort villages throughout the province to discuss current issues affecting their municipalities. We've prepared a draft itinerary and agenda for the event, but if your municipality is interested in introducing topics for discussion at the meeting, please contact our Senior Policy Advisor, Sean McKenzie.

Visit the event listing on our website for more information, and to get registered.

Census 2016
Gearing Up

Work on Statistics Canada's 2016 census has already begun in Northern Saskatchewan, and work in the south will begin next month. The data collected during the census is vital to municipal work, from planning to funding. Population data guides several of the funding programs for municipalities, such as the federal Gas Tax Fund and provincial revenue sharing, so your municipality has a stake in ensuring this data is accurate. Work with Statistics Canada to ensure all your residents are captured in the census, especially if you've built new neighbourhoods since the 2011 census.

A recognized, independent appraisal will stand up as evidence for municipal assessment appeal. Suncorp Valuations provides valuations in residential, commercial, public sector, industrial, agricultural, and property tax assignments.

Canada's most experienced appraisal and valuation firm, Suncorp Valuations offers discounts for SUMA members. Contact Tom at 306-652-0311 for more information.
