Lent Wednesdays

As John Westerhoff, Richard Rohr, and many others continue to say, "You can't think your may into a new way of acting; you have to act your way into a new way of thinking." Each Wednesday in March we will introduce a new way of "Practice" and then actually practice it together. Read more here...

Last Call for Pledges

If you haven't made a pledge for 2015, do it now. The Canons (laws) of the church require that in order to be a member of the parish, a financial commitment (pledge) must be made. It is now time to prepare the membership list of Holy Comforter for the National Church and the Diocese. If you have not made a pledge, you also will not be included in the Parish Directory. So, if you have not yet done this, please do it now! We want and need everyone to be a part of our Holy Comforter community.

...in the vineyard

By now, most will have heard the very sad news that Linda Relias died Monday, February 16. Linda and John, her husband, have been stalwart parishioners for many years, most recently fixtures at the 11:15 Eucharist. Our hearts, prayers and love go out to John, to their daughters, Annie and Alexandria, their sons-in-law Michael Kropp and Jonathan Cifonelli, and their grandchildren. We celebrated Linda's life and presence among us this past Saturday, and she will be interred later this week at Memorial Park in Skokie. May God embrace Linda with light and love and life eternal.

We also received word two weeks ago that Eric Franke, long-time parishioner and former Vestry member, died on Tuesday, February 10, in Sycamore, at the age of 75. Eric and Nancy were very active at Holy Comforter throughout their time here until moving away about 15 years ago. His funeral was celebrated at St. Peter's Church in Sycamore on Saturday, February 21, at 10:00 a.m., with interment later in the spring in the Holy Comforter columbarium. Please keep Nancy, their children Jill and James, and grandchildren in your hearts and prayers. May Eric know light perpetual, joy eternal, and life everlasting.

Baumstark's Law

by The Rev. Dr. Jason L. Parkin, Rector

There is in liturgical theology a principle known as "Baumstark's Law," named after the great 19th century liturgist Anton Baumstark. The "Law" is succinct: "The more profound the feast, the more ancient the practices employed to observe it." In essence, this means that at the holiest times of the Christian year, we tend to turn to the most ancient and profound rites to observe Jesus' journey to Jerusalem, his Last Supper with the disciples, his crucifixion, and, finally, his resurrection to new life.

Stewardship in Lent

By Marc Franson, Cavass Chair

When I was in college, my roommate and I decided that for Lent we would put a quarter in a jar every time we swore and at Easter donate it our parish. We hoped that by focusing on being able to control our actions and speech that we wouldn't really be out very much cash. But this was after all college and we soon realized that another jar would be needed! Read more here...

Homecoming

by F.J. Phillips, Planned Giving Committee

Just over 50 years ago my parents, John and Mary, were married at Holy Comforter. Ten years later I came along, and the church would always be part of my life. When my wife Carrie and I left the city and moved to Wilmette, we discussed what parish we should attend. Of course Holy Comforter was an obvious choice.  Read more here...

Prayer
The Strong Thread that Connects Us

by Pastor Heath Howe, Family Ministries

I remember when Sophie, my fifteen year old, was about two. I was a young mother, completely in love with her child. As I was putting Sophie to bed, I had the closest thing to a spiritual vision I have ever had. I saw, in my mind's eye, a woman who was putting her two year old son to bed as well. Read more here...

Teachable Moments

by Mary Johnson, Director of Children's Ministries & All Things Bright & Beautiful

At this point in the school year it is very obvious that our teachable moments with the children in All Things Bright and Beautiful and in our Sunday Children's Chapel have had a profound impact. Without question, the specific facts and functions of various components of the learning environments have been realized as a result of their routines. Read more here...

Be Still and Know

by Charlotte Long, Youth Ministries

We talk sometimes about the Great Commandment - love the Lord with all your heart, with all your mind and all your soul. The mind is included in that list. How can we get the great muscle of the brain to experience union with the Love Divine? How is our brain, which is always making lists, always prepping for tests, always checking what is right and wrong... how is our brain a part of Love? Read more here...
