GREETINGS FROM JANET RADY

How time flies! I cannot believe that January is already over as we head into the busy month of February.
Not long to go before the Edinburgh Iranian Festival (see below) at which I have the honour of being invited to speak at the opening ceremony of the Perceptions Exhibition.
This month also, we are pleased to focus on Janet Rady Fine Art artist Khaled Akil. Through his photography, Khaled poignantly engages with issues affecting Syrian society today, drawing on diverse historical and political imagery to highlight the fragility of this ancient culture.

Khaled Akil was born into an artistic family and is the son of established painter Youssef Akil. Born in Aleppo, Syria, Khaled graduated from Beirut Arab University with a Bachelor's degree in Law and Political Science in 2009. After graduating, the self-taught photographer returned to Syria just prior to that nation's Civil War, where he sought to discuss the nation's complexities through his artwork. Read full text

Please briefly explain how you examine and uncover these sometimes sensitive topics in your photographs.''Since I was born in Aleppo and live in Middle East, I grew up watching and witnessing its own contradictions and its weird mixture of religious, political and sexual issues.'
