April 2015
Smart Money
Lord Stanley and the Benjamins
As NHL players are only paid during the course of the regular season (October to April), it is often asked if players earn bonuses for enduring the grind and hard fought battles that accompany a long playoff run.

For those competing every other night during the NHL's second season, they are not only battling for the coveted Stanley Cup but also for playoff bonuses. This year, the NHLPA has put aside a playoff bonus 'pot' of $14-million (up from $13-million a year ago). This 'pot' is divided among the 16-teams playing in the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The further a team advances, the larger the playoff bonus (see chart outlining average payout per player, per round). There is also a team bonus for winning the President's Trophy (New York Rangers). Unlike other professional sports in North America, the truly unique feature is that the NHL players and management decide how the pot is shared among the team members.

The NHL ranks 3rd among the big four North American professional leagues when it comes to the size of playoff bonuses.  In 2014, MLB paid out the largest bonuses. Each player on the San Francisco Giants' roster received $338,000 upon winning the World Series (MLB Playoff Payout). The NBA, similar to the NHL, has a $14-million dollar playoff 'pot' but due to their reduced roster size, players receive higher individual payouts (NBA Playoff Payout). The Super Bowl champion New England Patriots were rewarded with $97,000 per player (NFL Super Bowl Payout), the lowest playoff bonus for a championship team within the big four North American leagues.

While the Stanley Cup is the true prize for the NHL players, the playoff bonus that is paid in July is a desirable secondary incentive!

Player Spotlight

Ryan Ellis
Nashville Predators
This month's player spotlight is on Nashville Predators' defensemen Ryan Ellis.  This is Ryan's fourth NHL season with the Preds, setting a career high in goals and  equaling  a career high in points. Ryan and the Preds had a strong regular season in the ultra competitive Western Conference, finishing third with 47 wins and 104 points.  Despite being eliminated by one of the Stanley Cup favorites, Chicago Blackhawks, Nashville has a bright future with their strong defensive core, headlined by the recent efforts of Ellis and his teammates.
Before becoming an NHL regular, Ryan put together one of the greatest junior careers of all time. Ryan still holds the record for the most points by a defensemen in the World Junior Championships (25 in 19 games) and has been ranked number 7 by TSN on the list of all-time greatest Canadian World Junior players.  Check out the article below discussing the importance of Ryan to the young Preds.
