Environmental Education

Home Visits

Another key component of our project is education. We have visited neighborhoods in the community that had not previously been visited. These visits allow us to inform households about the reality of waste management in our community. At the same time it is an opportunity to share information about our project and create awareness about the serious problem that the open air dump site represents.

Recycling Pick-up

Each Wendnesday

We are continuing our once a week (Wednesdays) recycling drive to gather plastic, tetrapack, aluminum, glass and clean/dry cardboard. The route extends from Esperanza to downtown Nosara thanks to the continuing support of various area hotels and businesses. If you are interested in supporting this community effort, please contact us. Special thanks to the support of:

Arts & Crafts with Recycled Materials

Workshop for women that work at the Recycling Center

The arts and crafts that are created with recycled materials are a great way to reuse materials that would many times end up in the garbage. They are also a tangible and educational tool that can be used to demonstrate to all that it is possible for us to change our way of thinking and turn discarded items into useful, valuable items that can be sold and turned into an additional source of income for the women that work at the Recycling Center and for the Recycling Center itself.

The women that work at the Recycling Center participated in a three day workshop with the artist Elizabeth Steinvorth. Mrs. Steinvorth has many years of experience working to turn other people's trash into art and she helped us improve and learn new techniques. Thank you Mrs. Steinvorth for donating your time and sharing your talents with us!

Funding for Recycling Center
Sonmbulo Concert

Thanks to the CRUSA Foundation, a concert with the well-known national band, Sonambulo Pscicotropical was organized. The fundraising concert was held at El Observatorio bar in San Jos. 100% of the ticket sales were donated to the Nosara Recycling and Education Center.Through this event 694,000 colones were raised and these funds have been allocated to cover the salaries of the Center's workers.

Power Grid Connection

Electricity for the Center

After more than two years of working with ICE we are finally approaching the final stages of building the electric grid that will allow us to use various compacting machines.  In order to complete this project, a contract was signed with ICE who is donating 50% of the cost and the Recycling Association is responsible for the reminder. The project, which cost was over 3 million colones, was funded thanks to a generous donation provided by CRUSA's, The Guanacaste Fund.

The following chart shows the sales (to date) of all recyclable material collected since the Center opened on October 2013. Thanks to all those supporting us. We need to increase the amount of recyclable materials collected to become self-sustaining.

Please bring your clean and dry recycled materials directly to the Recycling and Education Center or ask us about Wednesday's pick up routes.

Caricaco Music Festival 2014
Benefits the Recycling Center

On March 15th, the Nosara Recycling and Education Center was present at the 2014 Caricaco Arts and Music Festival. We helped maintain order and keep the event clean and did our best to gather recyclable materials. The organizers of the event donated 150,000 colones to be used towards covering the Center's operational expenses.

Fiestas de Nosara

The Recycling Center was there!

During January, the Nosara Recycling and Education Center had a stand at the Nosara Fiestas with information about the project and educational material on how to recycle in our community. We also sold some of the arts and crafts that the women of the Recycling Center created with recycled materials.
