Welcome New Water for Food Institute Staff
Karen Hansen
Karen Hansen
Proposal Development Coordinator

Karen Hansen will work with faculty, administrators and staff, as well as extramural partners, to coordinate the development of competitive external grant proposals, including the development of multidisciplinary and multi-institutional proposals. Her responsibilities will include identifying potential funding opportunities and managing the proposal development process. As needed, she will organize writing and development teams, communicate with funding agency officials, arrange expert external reviews and assist in securing institutional support.

Karen's professional career has focused on engaging representatives of diverse agencies and organizations, decision-makers and the public in community-based planning for protecting water quality and other natural resources. Her work has provided her with experience in generating grant proposals to obtain support for operating costs, environmental projects and programs and assisting with research proposals. She is very pleased to be part of the team at the Institute, and looks forward to contributing to the important work of global water conservation and food security.

Karen has a M.S. in forestry, fisheries and wildlife from UNL and a B.S. in biology from UNK.

Richael Young, Program Assistant
Richael Young
Program Associate

Richael Young will help strengthen DWFI's collaborations and capacity building with overseas partners and international organizations. She'll work to identify key needs related to water management and entrepreneurship around water use for food in an international setting.

For example, Richael is leading the Institute's creation of a professional development program for water resource managers and stakeholders in developing nations. The program aims to address stated needs for technical and policy analysis and for effective scientific communication by decision-makers and applied researchers.

Richael has an M.S. in agricultural and applied economics and a B.S. in civil and environmental engineering, both from the University of Illinois.

To get in touch with Richael, email ryoung@nebraska.edu.

Congratulations to DWFI Faculty Fellows

DWFI Faculty Fellow Suat Irmak received the John Deere Gold Medal and the Heermann Sprinkler Award at the international conference of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers in Montreal July 13-16.
Also at the conference, DWFI Faculty Fellow
Derek Heeren led a team of UNL students to a first place finish in the 2014 Fountain Wars competition. The students were challenged to design a fountain capable of balancing a leaking bucket and launch a parachute using energy originating from a water pump. Learn more.

Nebraska Water Center
Faculty Retreat
August 22

The Nebraska Water Center will conduct an all-day faculty retreat August 22 at the Lied Lodge in Nebraska City. The intent of the retreat is to identify key thrust areas for research for which federal and local funding are deemed available. Faculty will present their expertise and ongoing research activities. A small number of faculty groups will be formed to go after specific proposals over the next year. If you are interested in participating in this event and can provide feedback to the NWC director and the faculty as they prepare these proposals, this event is for you. Access to data, in-kind support or even matching funds are often necessary for winning proposals.

The retreat begins at 9:30 a.m. and will include a buffet lunch in the Timber Lodge Restaurant. It will conclude at approximately 4:30 p.m. If you wish to attend, please RSVP Tricia Liedle
by Aug. 13.

Pathfinder Dam 2014 NWC Water and Natural Resources Tour
2014 Water and Natural Resources Tour

The Nebraska Water Center's 2014 Water & Natural Resources Tour traveled to the North and South Platte River basins in western Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming July 15-18 to examine a variety of surface and groundwater issues in the two basins and to look at some of the outcomes of last year's flooding on the South Platte River.

The tour included visits to reservoirs that form the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation's North Platte and Kendrick irrigation projects. The historic dams, built over the first half of the 20th Century, supply surface irrigation water in Nebraska as far east as Minden. The tour began and ended in Kearney. Key to this tour's continuing success is the broad partnership that works together to plan and partially fund the event. This year's partnership included the Kearney Area Chamber of Commerce, Nebraska Water Balance Alliance, Nebraska Rural Radio Association, Nebraska Public Power District, Nebraska Water Leaders Academy, Platte River Recovery Implementation Program and the NWC, part of the Robert B. Daugherty Water for Food Institute. The tour was a sell-out with more than 60 attendees, including about a dozen students from the Nebraska State Irrigation Association's current Water Leaders Academy, a new group to take advantage of the tour's educational value. Also during the tour, we had the chance to explore possible future partnership opportunities with several of the local Natural Resources Districts, the NSIA, the Nebraska Water Balance Alliance and with several colleagues at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo.

In terms of number of attendees, range of attendees, partnerships and topics covered, this was the NWC's most successful annual tour in recent memory. Plans will soon be made for where the tour will go and what water and agriculture-related topics will be explored on the 2015 tour. Learn more and view photo gallery.
