Biblical Case for Changing Unjust Laws - Justly

Would you vote for a law where a 20 week fetus is given an anesthetic and then "humanely" aborted? The Montana legislature passed such a bill and is waiting on the governor's signature. This bill is "unjust" and displeases the Lord who will hold accountable a nation who despises His ways.

"Justice is turned back, and righteousness stands far away; for truth has stumbled in the public squares, and uprightness cannot enter. Truth is lacking, and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey.

The LORD saw it, and it displeased him that there was no justice." Isaiah 59:14-15

The prophet Isaiah speaks with the voice of God to a culture that was facing God's judgment for its wholesale denial of justice and righteousness.

Life a Path, Death a Destination

"Death is just another path, one that we all must take," the wizard Gandalf says in J.R.R. Tolkien's Return of the King. He is right - sooner or later, everyone faces death - but the path leading there can look very different depending on one's circumstances at the end of life. Modern medical advances can now often prolong old age through illness and enfeeblement, but at what point should human mortality be embraced, facing death with dignity?

In 2012, the Georgia General Assembly passed a bill initiating a medical form called Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment, or POLST, intended to help patients in their final year of life face these questions and communicate their answers to doctors and healthcare providers. This year that amended law - passed by both houses of the legislature and now awaiting the governor's signature - sets down many more specifics on how this law is implemented and opens up some serious concerns.

The Search for Speck

Aliens.

That was among the recurring themes during my three days as a member of the press at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. And of course it would be - that's every space nerd's dream: to find alien life. Just look at War of the Worlds, Star Trek, Star Wars, Andromeda, Stargate, and a hundred other sci-fi icons; popular culture has been fixated on discovering alien life for more than a hundred years. And what's better? NASA says they'll find life outside of Earth within the next 10 years.

NASA's search for alien life isn't what you would expect, however. If we're completely honest, they're cheating a little bit. When you and I hear "we'll find alien life," we think of little green men. NASA, on the other hand, simply means some trace of organic material outside of Earth. It doesn't even have to be very big or complex - a simple microbe would do the trick for them.

This got me thinking. I mean, really thinking.

National Day of Prayer 2015

"Fasting and prayer are religious exercises; the enjoining them an act of discipline. Every religious society has a right to determine for itself the time for these exercises, and the objects proper for them, according to their own particular tenets; and right can never be safer than in their hands, where the Constitution has deposited it." - Thomas Jefferson, 1808

On May 7, Americans of many faith traditions will devote themselves to prayer for our nation and its leadership in observance of the 64th annual National Day of Prayer. Established as an annual event by an act of Congress in 1952 and designated as the first Thursday in May in 1988, the National Day of Prayer (NDP) is an opportunity for Americans to pray together for the United States of America and those who lead the country - whether elected or appointed, civilian or military, religious or nonreligious. Prayer gatherings will range from a National Observance on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., to statewide events, to local observances in churches, community centers, government offices, and homes across the country.
