Come to the Agape Feast on Maundy Thursday April 2nd
Agape is a Greek word used in the New Testament to mean the love that we have for each other as Christians. Paul's famous summary, "faith, hope and love abide, these three, and the greatest of these is love" (I Corinthians 13:13), uses the word agape for love. In the first few centuries of the church's life, worship on the Lord's day took place in the form of an agape meal, or love feast."
One week from today, we will have that love feast in our Narthex starting at 6:00 pm. We'll serve olives, nuts, hummus, delicious fruits and crusty breads. Everyone is welcomed to bring something for the meal, though no one must bring anything to participate. Children are welcome as always. If you choose to bring something, let us know at [email protected] please.
After the meal, which can symbolize the last supper of Jesus with his disciples, we will go into the Nave for the last Eucharist prior to the Resurrection, and the stripping of the altar, which symbolizes the humiliation of Jesus at the hands of the soldiers.

Did You Know about Maundy Thursday?
The Thursday of Holy Week, on which the church remembers Jesus' institution of the eucharist and the washing of the disciples' feet. "Maundy" is the medieval English form of the Latin word mandatum, meaning "commandment" and refers to Jesus' "new commandment" in John 13:34: "I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another." We remember (anamnesis, to "recall and make present now") the institution of the Mass. The altar is stripped in preparation for the desolation of good Friday, and we are invited to watch with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. Thursday 7:00 p.m.

Stripping of the Altar
 Stripping of the altar (removing all ornaments, linens and paraments) is an ancient custom of the Church done on Maundy Thursday. It is symbolic of the humiliation of Jesus at the hands of the soldiers.
After the Last Supper, less than 24 hours remained in the earthly life of our Lord. Events moved rapidly: prayer in Gethsemane, betrayal by Judas, arrest, mock trial, painful beating, the trudge to Golgotha and execution.
As his life was stripped for Him, so we strip our altar of the signs of life to symbolize His purposeful, redemptive suffering and death for us. Plants are new life springing forth. In the passion and suffering of Christ, human life ebbs from Him. In recognition of this we remove the palms from our altar. |

Flowering of the Cross
At the beginning of the Sunday Service, the children will place flowers on the cross to symbolize the new life springing forth. We'll have flowers available, and you may bring flowers from home, too.
