GUN SMOKE & DUSTY TRAILS ARRIVES AT THE RIDGWAY VISITORS CENTER

Gun Smoke and Dusty Trails arrives at the Ridgway Visitors Center.
Artist Lee Lester's  6' bronze statute is standing proudly, gazing east - rifle and saddle in hand.

The Ridgway Chamber worked with PARC (Public Art Ridgway Colorado) and the O. C. Cattlemen's Association to bring this reminder of Ridgway's ranching history to our community.

Thank you to Susan Baker who made the first request, thank you to Ned Bosworth who made this happen and thank you to Kuno Vollenweider for building the base and installing.

Thank you to the sculptor - Lee Lester from Buena Vista
The bronze is valued at $35,000  Check out his web site:   leelesterstudio.com

Ridgway Community,

Thank you for attending the downtown project outreach meeting in mid-March, and/or for expressing an interest in being informed and informing the downtown construction project. In follow up to your inputs at the March meeting:

  1) Our Town/CDOT Team is working on a Communications Plan. We will have another public meeting, likely early this summer, to present a draft plan to you and ask for feedback in developing the final plan;

  2) We are using your inputs to put together a community and business support plan in preparation for major construction next year, and we will reach out to you soon for feedback on this as well;

  3) We know the project timeline, phasing, detour, general construction plan and impacts are critical for everyone to prepare for the 2016 construction. We continue to explore the alternatives, pros and cons, costs and opportunities, for the community and the project. As soon as we have something to share with you, we will do so. Thanks for being patient with this important, time-consuming and carefully-considered task. Our goal is to have this available in July.

  4) Region 10 will be hosting a training this Fall (2015) for contractors/businesses wanting to bid and work on CDOT projects. Please keep your eyes and ears open for the date, time and location of this training.

  5) For property owners in the downtown construction impact area north of Highway 62: Town Staff will be reaching out to you very soon about stubbing out water and sewer utilities to your property this Fall (2015) in advance of the project construction; Our Public Works Director, Joanne Fagan, will be working with you to coordinate these utility extensions with the goal of accessing these utilities now and avoiding future, costly extentions after concrete and asphalt are in place.

  6) For property owners in the construction impact area along Highway 62 and downtown: CDOT staff may be contacting you about temporary easements needed during the construction period;

  7) Please continue to prepare and think about how this project will impact you and/or your business before, during and after the construction period, and continuously check the project website (below) for details and updates.

The project website is: https://www.codot.gov/projects/sh62rampupridgway. You will find basic project information here, and we will be posting updates on this website throughout the project.

Please email us at [email protected] with questions, ideas, thoughts, comments, suggestions or anything about this project.

Attached at this link is the "Ouray County Cone Zone Business Survival Guide" to plan for and survive constrution. This was developed by Region 10 and the Town of Ridgway and was distributed at the March 18 public meeting.

In gratitude for your continued engagement and support,

Jen

CDOT OFFICIAL UPDATE

On Red Mountain Project

After more discussion among the engineering team and San Miguel Power Association (SMPA), we have decided to postpone the work that will require closures until after Labor Day (note that some work will likely be underway this summer, but not work that requires the full closures).

More details will be forthcoming, not only at the meeting with Ouray Council this evening, but in a release I will send to town, county, media regarding details of the various projects:

1) SMPA's transmission line repair

2) CDOT's crib wall repairs (at several locations including Ruby Walls)

3) CDOT's rock fall fence clearing/maintenance

Again, we were attempting to schedule SMPA's work (that required closures) with our own project so as to minimize impacts; it was certainly not our intent to disregard an important travel season for communities, but rather tighten up the impacts. So working through the schedules and noting the ability for these projects to be postponed, we hope we have come up with something that is more balanced.

I will continue to keep you informed on the work.

Best regards,

Nancy Shanks

OURAY ELKS AWARD SCHOLARSHIPS

Ouray Elks Lodge 492 has its scholarship winners for this academic year
elks logo
Chiara Dagenhardt and Julia Vann have each earned $500 awards funded by the Elks National Foundation through the Colorado Elks Association, and Jacqueline Saunders and Malori Trujillo have each been awarded $400 scholarships funded by the Ouray Lodge.  All are seniors at Ouray High School.

            "We are really fortunate to have such fine and deserving students in our community," said Elks Scholarship Chairman Jim Pettengill.  "I just wish we could have rewarded every student who applied.  The first week in May is Youth Week for the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and supporting our youth is a major duty of the Elks.  In addition to scholarships, we do this through our Hoop Shoot program, Santa Delivers, Easter egg hunt, and our annual Haunted House.  We have supported Ouray girl's basketball, hold fundraisers for the foreign language clubs at both high schools and donate funds for special educational opportunities for individual students.  Our young people are the future of this nation, and providing them with financial aid as they enter college is one of the most important of our programs in support of our outstanding local youth."

            Ouray Elks Lodge #492 awards four scholarships each year to area students.  To apply for next year's awards, students should contact their school counselors early next fall for applications, or contact Pettengill at 626-4239.

SHERB TALKS APRIL 30TH
Brendan Allison presents "Brain-Computer Interfaces and New Applications"

"Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) are devices that read a user's brain activity, usually through an electrode cap placed outside the head, and then use that activity for communication. Thus, BCIs provide communication without any movement whatsoever. For many years, BCIs have been used primarily as tools for severely disabled users, who cannot communicate through other means. However, recent research has introduced promising new applications to help persons with stroke, coma, brain injuries, and other conditions. BCIs for healthy users are also gaining attention. This talk will introduce BCIs and present an overview of these and other cutting-edge research directions.".   $10 suggested donation at the door.  Talk at 7:30.

COLORADO HEALTH INSTITUTE
New Study: Successes and Setbacks in Colorado's Retail Marijuana Policy

The Colorado Health Institute released a study today on the public policy successes and setbacks of legalized marijuana sales in Colorado, which became the first state to legalize retail marijuana on January 1, 2014.

While predictions centered on crime waves, an epidemic of overdoses, skyrocketing drug use among kids and a tax windfall for schools, none of this has happened.
Instead, more than a year later, the most pressing issues are how to label edible marijuana products, how to deal with unpredictable tax revenues and how the state's marijuana merchants can safely bank their money.
