Budget
We have completed our budget deliberations at both the city and region and I am pleased to advise that we have come in with an increase well below the Consumer Price Index and Construction Price Index at a total tax impact of 2.2%.  The city portion of the bill reflects a 1.3% increase and the region portion a .9% increase for the 2.2% total.  

 

I want to thank residents who sent me their budget ideas and comments as they were invaluable and of great help to me as I considered reports and requests. 

 

I supported the city budget with the exception of the ongoing $1 million levy to provide capital funding to the University of Toronto Mississauga. While I support the project, I feel that I cannot support giving money to a provincially funded institution and at the same time cut needed capital projects within the city. We have too many of our own infrastructure needs at this time and it does not make sense to debt finance our capital projects at the same time giving away tax dollars to an outside agency/organization. The total commitment Council has now made is $10 million of our tax dollars to UTM which will be paid over the next 9 years (first payment was made in 2014).

 

At the region, the increase in the budget is mainly a result of increased costs for policing services.  All departments found many efficiencies as directed by Council and enabled us to keep the tax impact low.  I feel that these are good budgets that retain our service levels and implement further efficiencies in all departments.  Council is committed to continuing to review all our services as we have in the past and will be conducting another full service level review in the coming year.

Steering Committee -
Meadowvale Planning Strategy

 

I am establishing a steering committee to work on a strategy for future planning applications in Meadowvale.  I will be starting with the members of the Steering Committee for the 6719 Glen Erin project as many of them have also been involved in other applications.

It is my intent to come up with a strategy for dealing with the many unsuitable applications for development and redevelopment we are starting to get in our community.  At least one is at the Ontario Municipal Board with a November hearing date and I am sure that there will be several others who will appeal their applications to the OMB as well.

 

It is not enough for us to simply refuse these applications.  We need to have a solid argument based on existing City Planning policies also recognizing the provincial policies that the OMB will be looking at.

 

I have asked our Planning staff to start to work on this strategy but I want to get public involvement.  So far the input from residents has been extremely helpful and I look forward to forming a united position that is well structured and presents a solid rationale.

Special Ward 9 Event - 

War of the Wards at the Steelheads March 8

 

Tickets are starting to sell for our 2015 Ward event at the Steelheads and so far Ward 9 is leading in sales.  Last year Ward 9 residents filled the stands at Ward 9 Night with the Mississauga Steelheads, our local OHL team.  I am proud that Ward 9 had the largest group from any ward cheering on the Steelheads.   

 

We can do it again.  We can pack the stands with Ward 9 residents and cheer for our local team.  This year we are once again partnering with the Mississauga Steelheads offering a unique opportunity for you to see some great family entertainment with high-energy hockey including future big-league pro players. 

 

It's the War of the Wards and it takes place at the Hershey Centre on Sunday, March 8, 2015 at 2:00 p.m.  Tickets are buy one, get one free! 

 

On the afternoon of March 8, we can get together at the Hershey Centre to not only spur on the home side to victory over the Ottawa 67's but we can also be recognized as the most loyal and the loudest ward.  I know that Ward 9 can claim this title again this year!

 

The "War of the Wards" will be a lot of fun with great hockey and lots of regular in-game contests and prizes.  In addition, Ward 9 fans will have a chance to win other exclusive prizes.  I will be handing out some "loot" to the loudest fans, the best dressed and more. 

 

Through this promotion, the tickets are "buy one, get one free." This promotion only applies to Red seats and we will have an entire section blocked off for Ward 9. Red seats are normally $16.90 and will be two-for-one for this game. This discount begins TODAY.

If purchasing at the Box Office, you need to mention you are in Ward 9. These box office tickets will be $8.45 each (tax incl).  The Hershey Centre box office is open Monday to Friday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm and on Saturdays from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.

 

If you love hockey this is a great chance to cheer on your local hockey team alongside your neighbours.  I look forward to joining many Ward 9 residents in the stands as we cheer the Steelheads on to victory.

Updatestraffic

New Traffic Management system moving ahead 

 

Council approved many years ago moving ahead with a new updated traffic control system that would allow staff to respond quickly to traffic needs (congestion, collisions etc.)  We have been working on it for some time and have already implemented some of the project parts such as traffic cameras. These are only located east of Hurontario Street and I asked at a recent Council meeting that the west end of the city be given priority for the next phase of installation. The complete project will be phased in over the next 3 years but we will see improvements along the way. 

 

Traffic Improvements in Ward 9 

I am always looking for ways to improve traffic flow and safety in the community and regularly have staff conduct traffic studies where I or residents see a need. If warrants are not met for changes, then I ask staff to monitor the location in the hope that we will be able to implement change in the future.
 

Tenth Line/Britannia 

I am pleased to announce that some additional traffic improvements have been approved for Ward 9. Regional staff advise me that they will be implementing a southbound to eastbound left turn signal from Tenth Line to Britannia Road. I have had staff monitor this location for some time and I am pleased that the warrants are finally met.  The advanced turn signals will operate all the time and should make it easier for Tenth Line motorists to access Britannia.
 

Argentia/Derry
Also, the region has completed the Environmental Assessment for improvement of the intersection of Argentia Road and Derry Road.  The correct decision was made a few years ago to not widen Derry Road through Meadowvale but I did ask for intersection improvements to be made at Millcreek and at Argentia.

The Millcreek work was done and now we have completed the EA for Argentia we can schedule the work. This will consist of dual left turns from westbound Derry to southbound Argentia as well as an additional through lane on Argentia north and southbound. Also we will be completing sidewalks and multi-use trails in this location.  I will post information on my website when details about timing are available.

Beware

Beware!  Scam Alert - Enersource Customers Targeted 

 

This is to advise you of a very aggressive scam that is targeted at Enersource customers.  I want to advise residents to be very cautious. Enersource customers are receiving phone calls threatening disconnection if a payment of $1,500 is not made on their Enersource accounts.  The caller indicates that if payment is not made by credit card, Paypal or cash, the customer's power will be disconnected immediately.  The caller also informs that if paying by a credit card, a crew would come to the home to process the payment.   

 

These calls are NOT from Enersource.  Do not give your financial or personal information to anyone calling in this regard. 

 

If you receive this type of call please call Enersource at 905-273-9050 to notify them of the issue and confirm status of your account.  Please also call Peel Regional Police at 905-453-2121 and contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

Paramedic

New Paramedic Reporting Station Being Built

  

The Region of Peel is building a new Paramedic station on the southeast corner of Erin Mills Parkway and Thomas Street.  

 
While this is located in Ward 11, as it is across Erin Mills Parkway from our community, I have informed residents in the area about the plans.  This site was previously planned to be a Peel Regional Police station but those plans were changed some years ago and we kept the land for the paramedic services.   To see the plans please visit the Ward 9 website at www.ward9.ca and click on City Info/Development.

New Waste Collection - Cart Information
March 5,  4:30 pm - 8:30 pm  
Erin Meadows Community Centre

 

Starting on January 4, 2016, your waste collection services will be changing to a full cart system.  Garbage will be collected on alternate weeks from recycling and organics will be collected every week.

 

This program was decided by Regional Council in 2013  and the contracts for the service were awarded in 2014 for implementation in 2016.  

At this time Peel is the only region that still provides weekly garbage collection.  All other municipalities have been on the bi-weekly collection for many years and we have the benefit of seeing how the program has worked.   We also undertook several pilots in Peel to get resident input on various methods of collection before making the decision.

 

We are committed to increasing our diversion from waste to 50 per cent by 2021 and this is one of the means to get to that target.  As almost all waste can be either recycled or composted, the amount of garbage left at the curb can be reduced dramatically if residents follow these programs.   The main concern most residents on the pilot had at the start of their participation was any "smell" factor of garbage left for two weeks but as anything that can produce odours can be put in the organics bin and collected weekly, this was not a concern.

 

This program will also save Peel residents about $9 million dollars annually on contract collection costs.

 

In order to ensure that families have the right size bin for your needs, we are providing a means for you to select which size of the garbage and recycling bins you will require.  Garbage and recycling bins come in small, medium and large sizes and the organics bin is one size only. 

 

All of the information on the program is on the website and you can also call the Peel service number at 211 if you have questions.  I also urge you to attend an Open House being held in Ward 9 on Thursday March 5, 2015 from 4:30 - 8:30 p.m. at Erin Meadows Community Centre, 2800 Erin Centre Blvd to ask questions and view the carts before you make your decision.   

 

Once you know what size bins you need, click here to select the sizes of bins you want to receive.  You have until March 31, 2015 to choose your bins.  Your new bins will be delivered between September to December 2015.  Information on the removal of old blue/grey boxes and green bins will be available in early 2016.

This is a reminder of the City's On-Street Parking regulations during Winter Maintenance season. 


 To help our plows safely and efficiently clear roads, a winter on-street parking restriction is in effect in Mississauga between November 1, 2014 - March 3, 2015 from 2:00 am  - 6:00 am.

Chinese New Year

I had the honour of joining our Chinese community again on February 18 at the Fo Guang Shan Temple in Meadowvale to ring in the new Chinese New Year.   To view a video of the ringing of the bell please click here.

 

It is always such a pleasure to join the thousands of residents at the temple as they celebrate the new year and to bring greetings on behalf of Council for a prosperous and healthy Year of the Goat.

Coldestnight

The Coldest Night of the Year

 

The Coldest Night of the Year, a family-friendly walking fundraiser that raises money for the hungry, homeless and hurting in 80+ communities across Canada was held on Saturday, February 21, 2015.  

 

In our community, The Dam Youth Drop In Centre hosted the walk.  You can still support the teams and individuals who walked for the Dam.  For more information, click here.  

 

On February 5th I was pleased to join Gareth Morgan, draft pick from the GTA to the Seattle Mariners and the Dam's Ken Dryfhout at the kick off for Coldest Night of the Year.

Mississauga Pops Concert Band Playing Games Concert

 

This special concert is taking place on Sunday March 1, 2015 at 3:00 pm at Eden United Church, 3051 Battleford Drive and is based on the theme "Playing Games".  It will be a multimedia event featuring music that was composed for the video game industry and game themed movies such as Enders Game, Hunger Games; World of Warcraft, Mario Brothers, Halo and Civilization and Zelda.

Pan Am / Parapan Am Games information session

 

  

In just a few months, Mississauga will host the martial arts for the Pan Am Games and many of the Para Pan Am events at Hershey Centre.

 

Mississauga businesses and residents are invited to attend a public drop-in session to learn more about the events that will take place in Mississauga.   

The session is taking place on Wednesday March 4, 2015 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Hershey Sportzone (gymnasium), 5600 Rose Cherry Place and will be hosted by the Toronto 2015 Pan Am and Para Pan Am Games Organizing Committee.  Representatives from the organizing committee, the Ministry of Transportation, the Integrated Security Unit and the City of Mississauga will be there to answer questions.

  

Space is limited. Groups are encouraged to send one or two representatives.

Money Smarts Expo for Seniors 2015

   

Peel Elder Abuse Prevention Network (PEAPN) and CARP Mississauga have partnered up to host the Money Smarts Expo for Seniors 2015 at the Trinity Hall Canadian Coptic Centre at 1245 Eglinton Ave W, Mississauga, ON on Wednesday March 11th, 2015. 

  

There will be 50 exhibitors and presentations running all day by financial experts on estate planning, home renovations, fraud and scams prevention, smart travelling tips, and many more. This event is FREE, and an optional hot lunch buffet is offered to attendees for $10.00.

St Francis of Assisi Anglican Church 40th Anniversary Concert 

 

This year, St. Francis of Assisi Anglican Church celebrates its 40th Anniversary and there are many events that will recognize this important milestone.

On Sunday March 22 at 2:00 pm, Justus will perform a Concert in celebration of both the church's 40th anniversary and Justus's 40th anniversary at 6945 Meadowvale Town Centre Circle. This is the final year that Justus is performing so be sure to get your tickets for this special occasion!
