Welcome Back to Another Great Semester!
We hope you are off to a smooth start this spring semester. We look forward to meeting new students and seeing all the familiar faces from previous semesters. We are here to give you the much needed support and resources you need to complete your degree and gain the confidence, opportunity and knowledge that come with a diploma.

Peggy Pasin, WSC Coordinator, visits with Elizabeth Smart
Motivational speaker, Elizabeth Smart, who is also a victim's right advocate and kidnapping survivor, came to speak at UVU on Dec. 10, 2014. She related her abduction to the adversity everyone faces in life. When life gets difficult and trials come, Smart encouraged the audience to
"move forward and not look back." UVU president Matthew Holland encouraged students to learn from Smart but noted that she didn't just bounce back the next day, he said "It took education, faith and gritty determination to get where she is." Smart was the final speaker of the semester for the UVUSA Academic Senate speaker lineup.

Highlights from Women in our Community 

Tanra Cornell

Tanra Cornell is a prime example of what dedication, hard work and hope can do for someone. When first starting school, she described herself as a hardworking Idaho farm girl, and a single parent to six wonderful children. 

Now as a senior getting her bachelors degree in behavior science with an emphasis in family studies and a minor in legal studies, she is achieving one of her major life goals. Personal life challenges have been the catalysts behind her multidisciplinary studies and personal research in needs and barriers for single parents and families in high conflict post-divorce. 
Tanra is looking forward to working in parent and family advocacy, in post-divorce resource management and development and implementation of interventive programs.

 

Tanra is thankful for the help and guidance she received from resources on campus such as the Women's Success Center and Turning Point. She loves giving back to our community by volunteering with many different organizations such as; Ogden Women's Center, Child Crisis Center, UVU Woman's Center, Parent/Teen Mediation Program and many other organizations. She hopes to offer meaningful support through the Women's Center Resource Group to those 

who need resources in their life and desires to rise above their struggles

Does the Gender Gap in Youth Sports Contribute to the Confidence Gap Between Genders in the Workplace?  

The Utah High School Activities Association reports that there is a large gap between Utah high school boys and girls playing sports. Their reports show that just over 35,000 boys and only 24,500 girls are playing sports. Dr. Susan Madsen, director of the Utah 
Women and Leadership Project, has done extensive studies on the benefits of sports for women. 

She believes that there are things women learn while playing sports whether on a team or individual, that they don't learn in other ways. Some of these skills are: teamwork, how to make decisions quickly, how to act quickly, taking risks, giving and receiving feedback to better their performance and how to do physically tough things. These skills, along with others, help build confidence in women and better prepare them for the workplace. 

With such a large gap between the participation of girls and boys in sports, it is evident that many girls in Utah are missing out on the lessons learned through sports and the much desired skills used in the workplace. 

So what can YOU do about this problem? Whether you have a sister, daughter, niece, granddaughter or friend in your life, here are five things you can do.

1) Introduce her to kid-centric sports early in her life.
2) Encourage her to try different sports and have fun playing them.
3) Increase visibility of successful female athletes who can become role-models for girls.
4) Be sure to give girls the same opportunity's that boy's have to go to sporting events, watch sports on T.V. and play sports themselves. 
5) Give positive reinforcement about sport participation. 

The increased participation of sports will promote a healthy, happier, more confident generation of girls who will go on to become strong confident women in homes, communities, and workplace.

2) Mo'ne Davis, 14 year old Little League Baseball pitcher, she is the first Little League baseball player to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated as a Little League player.

The 10 Skills Employers Most Want In 2015 Graduates 
 
Teamwork is sometimes a dreaded word in college and avoided at all cost, but you may not want to be so quick to dodge the opportunity to be part of a team.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) a non-profit group that links college career placement offices with employers, ran a survey asking 260 hiring managers (from large companies such as Chevron, IBM, Seagate, etc.) what skills they plan to prioritize when they recruit from the class of 2015 at colleges and graduate schools.  NACE reports that "77.8% of respondents chose both leadership and the ability to work in a team structure," as the top attributes employers were looking for. 
    
If you are in a situation where the team you are a part of is not working effectively together, take the opportunity to become the leader and help your team build goals and trust for one another to help build a stronger team.
    
Be sure to take the initiative in team building experiences not only in the classroom but also with student government, volunteer work, joining a UVU club, interns, or other jobs you may have.
