"Life has no remote. Get up and change it yourself" Anon

August 2014
Issue #44

No apologies for the length of this edition - there's just so much going off!

Now I came across the above quote on Facebook of all places, but so loved it. It looks like it is outside a church - neon lights included - so thanks to my good friend Sue Sweeney for sharing it.

Must say, applying it to the business scene, I get fed up of so many people who are part of Business Groups banging on about how they don't see any benefit from being a member of this, that and the other group because there are no leads being generated.  Some years ago, as my good friend Martin Miles of ibd will tell you, I had one of those wondrous 'Aha' moments.

You like me, doubtless came out of the comfort of corporate life where work 'appeared' for you to do - but that business model gets screwed when you are running your own business.  So, the realisation hit me that the only person going to make things happen was - yes you're ahead of me - good old ME.  So I told myself I had to reinvent myself on the business stage; see to it that I learnt the skills I was missing; get stuck in and bloody well make things happen!

Now, don't get me wrong, some things I tried died on their a*** but others came through with flying colours.  Indeed, the opportunities to talk around the region about not only social media but modern day networking have been one such success story.

So, get off that chuffing couch, roll your sleeves up and take responsibility for your fortunes - it's out there believe me! OK rant over . . . . and relax.

ps: As regards the latest talk on networking, 'Convert Strangers into Client or Colleagues'well that will be at these venues in the coming weeks:

September 14th - Chamber Means Business, Tankersley Manor, 10:30am in the Crook Barn

The Five Most Common Ailments that Businesses Suffer From
Love this summary by Shane Schutte as he walks you through the tortuous self-realisation that you might have got certain aspects of your business wrong, or at best been led astray.

Not for the faint hearted this one, but go take a look and if you start telling yourself that it all sounds too familiar then at least you have a head start over your competitors as regards putting it right.

Really resonated with him when I saw his closing sentence, wonder why?

"They must learn to understand that quality, external advice or help costs money and cheap isn't necessarily the best option for the business and need to identify their comfort zones and summon the strength to challenge and overcome them."

Welcome a New Face to The ISO 9001 Support Centre
I am delighted to introduce Arwen May to you all as my new Associate at the 9001 Support Centre.  Arwen is the Founding Director of James Lovely Associates in Doncaster and a qualified auditor for 9001 and AS9100.   We are both excited at the opportunities this collaboration will provide, so look out for here on site and events in the coming months.

Mind you, there is actually an opportunity for you to help Arwen out even now if you would. I have just learnt that she is about to step into the ring for a boxing match (really) to raise money for Yorkshire Air Ambulance on September 14th at the Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster.

You can sponsor her for whatever sum you like by clicking through here but I'll leave her to explain why she got involved:

We all have mad, inspirational moments. Mine was to sign up to Pink Collar Boxing. I will be taking part in a charity boxing match at the Keepmoat Stadium, Doncaster on Sunday 14th September.

The choir I sing in, Simply Voices, has chosen Yorkshire Air Ambulance as their charity this year. This is such a worthy cause and I am delighted to be able to contribute to this fundraising.

So, come, you can spare a few quid under those circumstances can't you? Click here, you know you want to.
Top 7 Tips for Running a Family Business
Now just bear with me as I lay out the egg shells on the floor before divulging what is in this article from Ben Copper. Well, you have to admit that the culture and structure, and most everything else for that matter, can be quite different when parents, children and relations get together inside a business.

It states that there are around 3m such companies in the UK so that on its own deserves recognition.  Are their any special circumstances then, structures, methods of working that are so different to other set-ups so need handling in a different way?

I am not going to be drawn except to say that I see number 2 and 4 high on my list of requirements.  However, I will leave it for you to discover the full picture.

Your Chance to Pre-Register for the 9001 App
There has been a lot of activity of late between myself and Michael Lavers of Firewalker Apps as we move towards the final version of the free 9001 Support Centre App.

You won't need telling that more and more communications within business are happening on phones and tablets, so here is a good example of how you can raise your profile by literally putting the power of your knowledge and expertise right into the palm of your followers' hands.

We are on track to launch it at the Chamber Means Business Conference and Exhibition on September 17th at Tankersley Manor near Barnsley BUT you have the chance to get to the head of the queue.

Before I even send out the promotional material, just email me to go on the pre-launch list. I will simply send you an email when it is live on the Apple and Android stores then you are in.

Ever fancied having one for your business? Happy to show you how to go about it if you like the sound of that.
Top 10 Apps for Boosting Small Business Productity
You should always be looking for ways to work smarter so here is the latest thoughts on Apps that may be able to do just that for your business.

Mike Tomlinson summaries what he feels we should at least be aware of and good to see Constant Contact made the cut. Office 365 could be the answer for those of you who steer away from paying out for the full package and I would be interested to hear from anyone who has tried it.

So, go have a look and see what's on the list.  Somehow feel he has missed one . . . . .
