The Men's Group
What is Your Attachment Style?

In previous meetings of the Men's Group, we discussed how early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) impact one's current life functioning.  The additional psychological construct that is integrated with EMSs in organizing and structuring the personality is "attachment style." Formed early in life in response to characteristics of the family environment and relationships, attachment styles remain fairly consistent across the lifespan and determine the nature and quality of our romantic relationships.  As a couple therapist, I cannot over-emphasize the extent to which attachment styles manifest in relationships and often negatively impact the potential for closeness and intimacy.  In the next meeting of the Men's Group on Saturday, May 16, 2015 (10:45 AM to 12:00 PM), I will introduce participants to the psychology of attachment styles and illustrate their role in adult romantic relationships.  I will also provide participants with questionnaires that will yield a determination of one's dominant attachment style. Discussion will be directed toward addressing the specific challenges of participants' attachment styles.  We will also complete our discussion on Schema Processes including "schema triggering," "schema surrender," "schema avoidance," and "schema overcompensation."  To register to attend this group on Saturday, May 16, 2015, please see the directions below.

The Dating and Relationship Group

What is Your Dominant Life Schema?

"Schemas" are psychological templates for how we engage, perceive and respond to the world.  They are formed early in life, emerging in the context of developmental experiences within the family environment.  I like to think of schemas as psychology's best explanation of "destiny" because they highly determine how, and in what way, our lives evolve. In the next meeting of the Dating and Relationship Group on Saturday, May 16, 2015 (12:00 to 1:15 PM), I will describe the 18 schemas that have been identified by researchers and the types of life experiences which activate them.  I will also provide attendees with a questionnaire that will determine one's dominant lifestyle schema.  We will then discuss the implications of these schemas as well as approaches to managing our adherence to them. To register to attend this group on Saturday, May 16, 2015, please see the directions below.
