HOUSE PASSES REP. NARAIN BILL TO TRAIN LAW ENFORCEMENT ON DIABETIC EMERGENCIES
TALLAHASSEE - The Florida House of Representatives today overwhelmingly passed Rep. Ed Narain's bill to extend education to law enforcement officers and improve response to those suffering a diabetic emergency.
HB 201 requires the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to create online continuing education training. The bill sponsored by Rep. Narain, D-Tampa, aims to help officers appropriately identify a diabetic emergency, avoid misidentification and prevent future tragedies for those Floridians who are among the nearly 26 million Americans who have the disease. The Arthur Green Jr. Act addresses the 2014 death of the 63-year-old Tampa man.
"On behalf of the Young-Green family, we feel a tremendous honor knowing that this legislation bearing the name of Arthur Green Jr. will be a lasting reminder of a wonderful man whose tragic demise will not be in vain," said Lena Young Green, widow of Arthur Green Jr. The family was in the gallery when the House passed Rep. Narain's bill Wednesday.
A companion bill, sponsored by Sen. Tom Lee, is ready for a final vote in the Senate.
"We appreciate the support of Representative Narain and Senator Lee in crafting this legislation to ensure Florida's law enforcement and correctional officers can quickly recognize diabetic emergencies and ultimately help ensure the safety of Florida's citizens and visitors," said Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Rick Swearingen.
"I am honored to have sponsored this bi-partisan legislation and am hopeful about the positive impact this will have on the lives of Floridians all across the state. Today, in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, 'out of a mountain of despair' we created a 'stone of hope.'"
According to the National Conference of State Legislators, this is the first bill in the nation to address the continuing education of law enforcement officers in diabetic emergencies.
