Writing for Publication

Our spring writing workshop,"Writing for Publication" is coming Saturday, March 14th!

We are pleased to announce that local author and publisher, Roberta George will be sharing tips and female instructor techniques she has learned throughout her career. The workshop is designed for beginning and experienced writers who are seeking encouragement, motivation, and guidance.

Roberta George was born in Bisbee, Arizona, and also lived in California and Texas, where she went to Catholic girls' schools. Almost every summer of her life, she spent with her German grandmother on a 20-acre farm in the South, which left her with an overwhelming desire to pick blackberries every spring - and make wine.  She has seven children and lives with a third-generation Lebanese husband in Valdosta, Georgia. She teaches yoga and a writers' work shop, The Snake Handlers, at the Turner Center for the Arts, where she served as Executive Director for 12 years. She's taught beginning English composition courses at VSU and FSU.

Roberta is the founding editor of Snake Nation Press, still in production after 25 years. She won a second prize for the poem, "Three o" from the Porter Fleming mag cover Foundation, and a first for the short story "Truces" in her collection Below the Gnat Line.  "Choices," was a finalist in a Glimmer Train contest.  "A Servant to Servants" also won a prize from the Porter Fleming Foundation and Berry College and was published by Snake Nation Press. A short memoir of her Border Patrol father won a second prize from the Valdosta Daily Times, and her novel Baptizing the Cat was just published by Snake Nation Press in 2012. Other poems have recently been selected by The Southern Poetry Review and the New Guard. And another short story, "A Small Fortune," was a finalist and honorable mention in the Malahat Literary contest.

The workshop will be in session from 9 AM - 12 PM on March 14th. Fee is $59 ($69 after March 6).

Learning in Retirement

Aim High

Success has no age limit. "Some people view growing older as a limitation when it comes to pursuing their success sign dreams -- but what if we started looking at accomplishment differently?

Studies have shown that having a specific goal to work toward boosts our happiness, and those with more ambitious pursuits are happier than those with low expectations." Many of the greatest business leaders of our time became prominent in life when they were well over 60.

Here are a few fun facts about successful people who got a start later in life:

After a military career as well as several failed previous ventures, Colonel Sanders took his first social security check and founded the famous Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise.

Later in life, the founder of Shaklee Corporation, Dr.

Forrest C. Shaklee, started what has become the number one natural nutrition company in the U.S. at the ripe age of 61.

'Angela's Ashes' author, Frank McCourt didn't take up writing until he was 65.

Kathryn Joosten started out as a nurse and then was a stay-at-home mother. After her marriage failed, she kathleen jooston thought she would chase her own dreams for once and become an actress. It took her several years and she was almost 60, when she finally found success in countless TV shows, such as Family Matters, My Name is Earl, Scrubs, and Desperate Housewives.

Benjamin Franklin invented bifocals at age 76.

Gail Dunn had years of experience working on cars Gail Dunn when she decided to set up a business to help women and others struggling with dealing with the automobile industry. So at age 64 she set up the Women's Automotive Connection to provide automotive advice.

Peter Roget invented the Thesaurus at age 73.

Ronald Reagan became the 40th American President ronald Reagan at the age of 70.

Age is just a number. Never stop dreaming or learning. Learning in Retirement (LIR) is an organization for individuals 50 years of age and above that provides a unique opportunity for cultural growth, lifelong learning, and recreation.

Set goals and realize your dreams. Aim high - no matter what your age!

The Time is Now

Are you successful?  The answer, of course, will depend on how you define success; and, for each of success sign us it is different.

For the poet, Ralph Waldo Emerson, success included "laughing often and much." For entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker, Jim Rohn, success was defined as doing "ordinary things extraordinarily well." Many see success as the attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like.

But probably we can agree that we see ourselves as successful simply with the accomplishment of our goals - whatever they may be.

Forbes online contributor, Erika Andersen observes the power of doing the right thing at the right time in the right way when you are trying to get to where you are going. Simply put, you must Envision, Plan, and Execute. The time is now!
