SAWDC Aviation Cluster Launches
Leadership Program
In partnership with VT Mobile Aerospace Engineering (VT MAE) and training provider, Alabama Technology Network (ATN), SAWDC, as part of its work associated with the National Fund for Workforce Solutions, kicked off the Aviation Cluster Incumbent Worker Leadership and Project Management Training Program. The training program includes leadership, project management and continuous improvement elements as well as coaching for current employees in supervisory roles at VT MAE. Candidates were selected based on their desire to improve and advance in their careers. The program is scheduled to be completed by September 30th. All participants, will receive wage increases upon successful completion.

BASF Creates Chemistry with Summer Internship Program Participants

BASF opened its doors to five college students, offering firsthand job experience in the areas of chemical process technology and engineering. "BASF is pleased to provide the summer internship program to students who are pursuing careers in the chemical industry," said George Vann, Vice President of the BASF site in McIntosh, Alabama. "It is important to us that local students have opportunities to prepare themselves to be leaders in our industry."
In addition to the summer internship program, BASF's McIntosh site offers two-year scholarships annually for students participating in the Chemical Process Technology Program at Alabama Southern Community College in Thomasville, Alabama. The program prepares students for jobs in the chemical industry. "Each scholarship recipient is offered a summer internship at our facility," said Lyna' Schell, Human Resources Manager of the BASF site in McIntosh, Alabama. "Engineering students at the University of South Alabama participate in the summer internship program as well. This allows students to connect what they've learned in the classroom with real industry applications."

Taking part in the summer internship program this year were Taylor Wynn, Austin Morgan and Hunter Warr, all students at Alabama Southern Community College; Benjamin Burleson, University of South Alabama; and Jeffrey Earl, Stevens Institute of Technology.
"BASF is filled with great people in all departments," said Wynn. "Most importantly, the workers strongly believe in personal and environmental safety. They strive towards encouraging new workers to keep safety first in all they do - no matter how big or small the task may be."
"I highly recommend this internship program to any student going into this field of study," said Morgan. "It is a great hands-on learning experience and good exposure to the day-to-day aspects of a career."

Rural Healthcare Cluster Program Aims to Put People to Work

Meeting the needs of employers and putting people to work is the main goal of a program currently underway through work of the Region 9 Southwest Alabama Workforce Development Council. Teaming with Reid State Technical College, the Alabama Career Center in Brewton and Monroeville, and healthcare employers from Conecuh, Escambia, and Monroe Counties, SAWDC is overseeing a grant that has made funds available to train individuals in these three counties to become certified nursing assistants.
