,

We are winding up the winter food drive so if you have anything you would like to donate feel free to drop it off at our office. My office food drive is done in support of the Greater Chicago Food Depository. They provide food for thousands of needy Chicagoans throughout the year, many from our own neighborhoods. Please consider giving to the food depository, your donations will directly help an individual or family in need.
GCFD
There are several ongoing water main reconstruction projects and new ones starting shortly. See below for more details, including a information on traffic delays. The Western Avenue projects will also entail moving east on Diversey to the Chicago River. This will cause major delays and reduce traffic to one lane in each direction starting December 22nd. Timing on all major infrastructure projects, especially underground projects, are dependent on issues like weather and unforeseen consequences in work plans.  Please take extra time to travel on these routes.

Congratulations to Pulaski Elementary in Bucktown for achieving the final stage of a four year plan to become an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP).
I hope all of the kids in the ward have a wonderful break from school and are ready to go back refreshed and ready to study in January!

Have a great weekend!

Western Ave. Water Main Project- Weekly Project Report

Water main reconstruction is taking place on Western Avenue for the next few weeks and will continue to cause major delays in traffic throughout the area.
Construction details are provided by the Department of Water Management

Weekly review for week of 12/15/14:

Complete segment No. 1:  N. Western Ave. 8" and 24" water mains - W. Diversey Ave. to N. Jones St. (East side)

Crew completed installation of 24" and 8" diameter water mains, hydrants, tees and valves ending at South line of Elston/Diversey.

Continue segment No. 5:  N. Western Ave. 24" water main - W. Diversey Ave. to North Branch of Chicago River

Second crew continued installing 24" pipe, test holes and alignment shift crossing Wolfram from the South. Concrete jersey barriers and barricades were previously set up North of Diversey to enclose and protect work area in Northbound Western Ave. traffic lanes.  Two southbound lanes and one northbound lane on Western remain open between River and Logan.

Weekly look-ahead for week of 12/22/14:

Crew No. 1 - 24" and 8" diameter water mains scheduled for flushing, pressure testing, chlorination and sampling during Christmas holiday week.

Crew No. 1 - During testing and chlorination of new pipes on Western, crew will set up traffic control on North side of Diversey between Western and Logan and move to Diversey at East line of Western and begin installing new 8" diameter pipe moving towards the East.  Traffic on Diversey will be restricted to one lane East and one lane West affecting parking availability on Diversey.

Crew No. 2 -  24" diameter water main construction is scheduled to continue between Wolfram and the North branch of the Chicago River.

Crew No. 3 tentatively scheduled to begin installing new 8" pipe on Nelson between Western and Oakley in January 2015.

Traffic:

Drivers who use Western Ave. on a daily basis are encouraged to add a few extra minutes to their driving time to allow for minor back-ups at Diversey and at Logan.  Residents and businesses are encouraged to contact crew with questions regarding this work and to alert crew to special access requirements (Handicapped driver, pedestrian, move-in and move-out and delivery trucks etc.) as well as scheduled water main shut downs.  Crew would also like residents' help in identifying sudden unsafe conditions like barricade knock-downs so corrective action may be taken.  Our crew would like to make sure everyone is notified prior to our scheduled shut downs.  Water Department door hangers and stickers are typically used as a shut-down notice. Emergency shut downs are rare but do happen.  Water pressure is usually restored within 2 hours (sometimes as short as 20 minutes) following an emergency shut down. Crew will request city services salt truck as-needed to make roadway safe in work areas during winter construction.

If you have issues or problems getting your water back on after intial shutdowns, the contact information for the water main crew engineer is:

Water Department construction trailer is located at 2401 W. Fletcher

Pension Pay to Play
Recent reports by the International Business Times (Newsweek) have highlighted the "pay to play" donations made by City pension fund municipal advisers to Mayor Emanuel's campaign. The SEC officially calls this pay to play, and former SEC chairman Arthur Levitt says "it smells like bribery." Pension investments and the earnings of municipal fund advisers are not the focus of the stories, but the donations are subject to SEC rules.

Along with a couple of council colleagues, I have sent a letter to the Securities and Exchange Commission to ask for an investigation of these donations. In response to a letter to the Chicago Board of Ethics, we have received an advisory opinion that the donations are not covered by our City rules concerning ethics. However, the SEC has ruled that such donations are pay to play and have fined municipal advisers for similar donations.

"The management of municipal pensions should be totally transparent and free of political influence," former SEC chairman Arthur Levitt told IBTimes after the Chicago contributions were described to him. "The acceptance of contributions by city officials from advisers managing city funds, in my book, smells like bribery." IBT Nov.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel Continues Getting Cash from Firms Managing Chicago Pension Money

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel Accepted Campaign Contributions From Financial Firms Managing City Pension Money

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel Tries to Exempt Financial Firms From Ethics Law -On its face, Chicago's municipal pension system is an integral part of the Chicago city government. The system is included in the city's budget, it is directly funded by the city and its board of trustees includes city officials and mayoral appointees. Yet when it comes to enforcing the city's anti-corruption laws, Mayor Rahm Emanuel's administration is now arguing that the pension funds are not part of the city government at all.

Business in the 32nd Ward: Chicago Center for the Print (CCP)

Chicago Center for the Print (CCP) has been at the same location since 1977. While CCP has been located in Lincoln Park for quite awhile, things never get boring. Specializing in international contemporary prints and European vintage posters, this gallery does its best to keep things vibrant.  Their current exhibition La Femme S'Affiche, Women in Posters, focuses on the role of women in advertising over the decades. Over the last 125 years, women have been dominant figures in selling a variety of products, including food, liquor, travel, and beauty.

Starting from the 1920's through the 1980's, this exhibit not only references the important role women play in advertisements, but it is an interesting visual history reflecting a changing culture. You find out more about the gallery and when you can see the exhibit by going to Chicago Center for the Print by going to their website at prints-posters.com.
