United Pres                               October, 2014
What a beautiful season fall is! The temperature falls so that we can open our windows and enjoy the fresh air. The leaves turn to a magnificent array of hues. The markets are filled with the harvest of fresh fruits and vegetables. It is no wonder that fall is the time that we turn to think about the bounty God has given us and the privilege we have to share that bounty with others.

On Sunday, October 5, 2014 we will be celebrating World Wide Communion with the kick-off of our Annual Stewardship Campaign.  I invite you all to pick up one of the Twenty-Day Devotionals that will be available in the narthex, take it home, and make it a part of your daily prayer life.  Our theme this year is "Love Gives," and we will be thinking about our God who is Love and at the same time the most generous giver of all.  As children of God, our generosity reflects the love of God.

Sunday, October 26, 2014 will be our Stewardship Dedication Sunday.  You will be receiving a letter by mail with a pledge card for the 2015 United Presbyterian Church budget.  We hope you will prayerfully consider how much of the many blessings God has given you that you would like to contribute to the work of the church to spread the love of God in Yardville and around the world.  Plan to bring your pledge to church on Oct. 26, or if you can't be with us that day, mail it to the church.  In addition to dedicating our pledges to next year's work, we will be recognizing the completion of the Growing for Tomorrow Campaign and dedicating our renovated facilities to God's work in our community.

As Paul writes to the Colossians: "Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony." If we give of ourselves and our resources motivated by love, there is no limit to the good we can do in the name of Christ.

Yours faithfully,
Pastor Jean

Dickens of a Christmas Bazaar is Coming!

On Saturday, November 1, 2014 you can beat the Christmas rush by coming to our Dickens of a Christmas Holiday Bazaar and find all your Christmas presents. It is time to start preparing for it now!  Queen Victoria's Deck the Hall Boutique will be filled with beautiful gifts, from Lenox China to Longenberger baskets.  At Bob Cratchit's Soup and Snacks you
can have a relaxing lunch. Bob's wife will be busy herself with Mrs. Cratchit's Sweet Shoppe, where you'll be able to find homemade cakes, pies, cookies and muffins.

Marley's Auction House will have some great items up for bid, including a fabulous counted cross stitch Christmas tree skirt, a bassinet, and Christmas gift baskets.  Now for the fun part - you can help.  We need you to "adopt" a basket .  We'll supply the basket if you don't have one.  Between now and October 19, fill it with items. You can make a basket to represent your nationality - an "Italian basket" with spaghetti, potholders and a bottle of olive oil or a "Scottish basket" filled with shortbread, scones, tea and a teacup.  Make up a "Night at the Movies Basket" with a new DVD and some packages of popcorn and a couple of Hershey bars. You can see a basket that was made for a knitting enthusiast: a book of patterns for Christmas gifts; red, green, and white yarn; and knitting needles.

There are many ways you can make our Christmas Bazaar a success. Spread the word among your friends. Bring in new items or collectibles that we can sell. if you like to do needlework or woodworking, make something and donate it for the silent auction.  Call Gloria Hanewald at 582-0511 or Rose Wales at 584-1687 if you would like more information or you would like to help.

All are welcome to join the choir as we present our Christmas cantata "Season of Wonders" on Sunday, December 14th, during the 11 a.m. worship service.  Weekly rehearsals will begin on Thursday, Oct. 2nd at 7:30 in the sanctuary (there will be a dress rehearsal on Sat. Dec. 6th at 10 a.m.). There are listening CDs available to assist in learning the cantata.  "Season of Wonders" is filled with classic carols as well as newly composed anthems, this hopeful work shines new light upon the miracles surrounding the birth of Jesus. In performing this work, different "messengers" announce the various narrations. Miracles and wonders are meant to be shared. The events that unfold are a series of wonders that are meant to be shared with the world so all may know the good news!

The United Presbyterian Women's luncheon which was scheduled for next Tuesday, October 7th, has been cancelled due to an emergency in our guest speaker's family.  We are trying to re-schedule his presentation for Tuesday, November 4th.  There will be an announcement in the bulletin about the new date.

Construction Update
We can really see light at the end of the tunnel - and it is not the headlight of an oncoming train!  Mount Hall's battered asbestos tile floor has been removed and replaced with vinyl.  Thanks to Terry Wagner, Megan Gadsby, Noah Pinto, Owen Wagner, and Michelle Parker for helping to get the room back to use. As the picture at the top of the newsletter shows, the exterior is nearly done.  We are still working on two projects this month, the ramp and the floors in front of the bathrooms.  The floors will be installed Thursday, October 2nd, and three coats of finish put on between Tuesday afternoon, October 7 and Thursday, October 9.  Those days the bathrooms will be inaccessible and people are asked to use the bathrooms in the office.
The joists of the ramp are in place, so that all we need to do now is lay the flooring and add the railing.  Thanks to Curly Rentner, Tom Kelley, Tom Zeyack, and Bill Malloy for their work on this project.

Special Thank You

GRATITUDE

Warmest thanks and appreciation to the dedicated women who not only had some of my poems assembled and published, but included a few pictures too in the booklets.

Peggy, Gloria, Lois and Jean M. deserve the praise, not I.  Kudos for their patience and hard work!  It's interesting to know that the owners and operators of the publishing company are Bill and Pat Mason, two of our church members.

Sincerely and in Christian Love to all,

                                                    Margaret Archibald

Mission Focus for October
The history of the Rescue Mission is filled with examples of tough times and small victories. Since its humble beginnings, the Mission has always reached out to those least equipped to cope with the hardships of life. The City Rescue Mission was founded in 1915 by Mr. and Mrs. William Anderson at a time when rescue missions were springing up in urban areas throughout the United States as Evangelical Christians sought to bring the Gospel to growing urban centers. While ministering to the spiritual needs of the homeless, it became painfully clear that there were also many material needs the Mission had to address. In response, the Board decided to purchase beds and provide more meal accommodations so that these men could be housed for weeks at a time until they were able to get back on their feet. It is recorded that as early as 1918, the Rescue Mission was a place of "refuge" for over 100 people per night.
While the Rescue Mission of Trenton has undergone many changes during the past nine decades, our focus has always been to help those in need to help themselves.
The belief in the intrinsic worth of each individual continues to motivate the Rescue Mission of Trenton to provide the highest quality care and to offer support, encouragement, and a sense of dignity to all who enter through its doors.
All donations earmarked for Mission in October will be used to support the work of the Rescue Mission of Trenton.
