Sometimes it's just as important to spread the news of others when they've been so supportive of us!  This month, we'd like to highlight a movie project for actress Jane Seymour, who has been a HUGE supporter of our work for many years.  We are hoping that you will help spread the word about High Strung Movie coming out Summer 2015.  The mission of High Strung Movie is to inspire everyone (especially our youth) to put dance into his or her lives!  The crew of High Strung is also recognizing the real heroes out there - the incredibly dedicated dance teachers!

See and like the film on Facebook at www.facebook.com/HighStrungMovie or Twitter @HighStrungMovie or use hashtag #HighStrungMovie

Spread the word!

Dance Therapist's Corner

Dra's Dream pediatric dance/movement therapy program, funded by the Andra Rizzo Foundation at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA, has been in existence for six years now. The dance/movement therapist, Dr. Lori Baudino, provides bedside therapy twice a week to all pediatric patients. The sessions support the patients to process and transform seemingly difficult and unchangeable circumstances into a place of healing and relief.

Patients explore increased range of movement, sensory integration for their individual preference styles, connection, care, and find adaptable coping strategies while in their own rooms.

This therapy currently serves as the only creative arts therapy they receive. One of the only chances the child has for effective psychological and emotional support from a qualified professional focusing on mental health and physical integration.

Patients have reported "this is very helpful to me to feel happier." "My child is getting out of bed and laughing."  Patients are exploring memories, accessing guided imagery for relaxation and using playful movement to work through stressors within their treatment.

Patients parents have been receptive to scheduling session times on a weekly basis and remaining consistent with attendance.

During a routine session, a patient complaining of pain and unable to move from
his bed was able to make progress during dance/movement therapy (DMT) The patient's mother and treatment team were concerned about his need for pain meds and seeking alternatives for support. With the use of DMT, the patient was able to learn coping strategies and increase his range of movement without medication. The patient communicated that he felt no pain at the end of his session and he was able to communicate more specifically about his emotional pain and fears which had been influencing his thoughts of using pain medication.

Another patient has been reluctant to have support from other disciplines during her hospitalization. When she experienced DMT, through the use of guided imagery and movement, she was able to physically change her posture in her bed, verbalized interest in socialization and supportive care.

Patients overall join in this creative, non-intrusive approach which meets them at their individual level, supports them to be themselves and communicate complicated emotional experiences with acceptance and growth. Patient
's parents are supportive of this practice as they see their children engaging, laughing, and moving.

Dance movement therapy has provided in-services and workshops to the child life department, the pediatric residents, social workers and the palliative care physicians.  Dr. Lori Baudino, the dance movement therapist, has also been asked to speak at the UCLA brain tumor conference this year.

Additionally, a goal has been set to work towards a research study to provide a census of the process and outcome supporting DMT within the hospital. The program is also looking to bring on student interns to provide additional training for schools as well as more direct care for patients.

The program will continue to provide the latest approaches in dance movement therapy with the knowledge of psychology, brain research and the mind/body connection for pediatric and family care.
