Google Lunar XPrize ramps up private moon race with $5 in awardsIt's been more than 40 years since the last person set foot on the moon, and the days when superpowers spent lavishly in an effort to beat one another to make the trip are now long past. But thanks to the Google Lunar XPrize, a new generation of the space race is underway. Eighteen private teams from around the world are vying to be the first to land a craft on the moon, roam at least 500 meters and send images and data back to earth for a grand prize of $20 million. Five of those teams got a major boost at an event at the California Academy of Sciences here on Monday, when the company doled out a total of $5.25 million in "milestone awards." Read more on Mashable! 3 Ways Schools Can Stretch Their Technology DollarsOver the last five years, Amber Charter School has brought in more laptops, tablets and interactive whiteboards, making it easier for teachers to find activities that match the different learning and engagement levels of each student. New York City schools like Amber Charter School and Mott Hall V are working hard to differentiate instruction with technology. And they're bringing in more technology by tapping into public and private funding sources, taking a frugal approach to their budgets and maintaining technology so it lasts longer. Read more on Government Technology! How many hours do we need to mentor to be part of the million? (Million Women Mentors)At Million Women Mentors, the team recognizes that all mentoring efforts are not equal, so we want to create an environment that really works for you and your colleagues, but also puts a stake in the ground that mentoring is about an ongoing relationship and should not be confused with guest speaking or a one hour coffee chat (although both can be filled with gems of wisdom and 'mentoring' guidance). Here is what we are proposing with this initiative. Goal of 20 hours (just 2 hours a month!) to mentor a girl or young woman in STEM skills. Some women are bringing in three mentees now bi-weekly for coffee or lunch mentoring small groups with goals and accountabilities and yes, you can count all three in your pledge.
