New U.S. Spending Deal a Mixed Bag for Science 
Science Insider
NASA and the National Science Foundation (NSF) appear to be among the winners-relatively speaking-in a spending deal reached Tuesday night by lawmakers in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, with both agencies receiving modest funding boosts. But research budgets at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Energy would remain flat.

To Diversify Nation's Tech Pipeline, AP Computer Science Gets A Reboot

Relatively speaking, not that many students take the Advanced Placement course in computer science.

Out of a little more than 2.3 million students for all subjects, fewer than 40,000 students took an exam for the course last year. While there was a slight uptick in the percentage of minority and female students, the data continue to show a jaw-dropping lack of racial and gender diversity.

John Urschel to Write Advanced Stats Column for The Players' Tribune

After graduating from Penn State with both a bachelor's degree in mathematics and a master's in math education with a 4.0 GPA, you could say John Urschel knows a thing or two about numbers. A starting offensive lineman in the NFL after being drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the fifth round of last year's draft, will write an advanced stats column for The Players' Tribune, a new media platform founded by Derek Jeter that publishes first-person stories directly from athletes.

STEM: Paths - An Interactive Christmas Experience 

We invite you to support and participate in our next event: an Interactive Christmas Experience for children living in DC public housing communities. Youth, parents, and stakeholders will get to enjoy unique interactive experiences with STEM competitions, coaching, teamwork, building, and more. This STEM carnival will include at least 20 educational experiences and will encourage participating youth to choose from a variety of potential STEM careers. The event will also include giveaways of STEM toys.

Any organization may join the Coalition, and there is no cost to become an Affiliate Member. Affiliate members are listed on our website, receive periodic communications on policy matters, and will be signed up for the weekly newsletter. 

 

Your organization can also apply to join the Coalition's Leadership Council, where they play an active role in setting the public policy agenda for the Coalition and are invited to participate in frequent interactions with policymakers.
